MACS J1149.5+2223 is a galaxy cluster in the constellation Leo.
It has been used as a gravitational lens for taking an image of the first-ever predicted reappearance of a supernova, Refsdal, the first detected multiply-lensed supernova, and Lesned Star 1, which was at the time the furthest star ever detected. The cluster is of such mass that light is bent around them, creating the lens effect. The photo of Refsdal was released on October 24, 2013, and data was obtained as part of an HST proposal, using the Hubble Space Telescope.
