American Can Company, San Jose also known as (American Can Company Plant 97-A) is a historic steel manufacturing plant located in San Jose, California. The building was well known for manufacturing tin cans for cliente producing produce.

Early Years

[edit]

It was built in October 1912 by American Can Company and began operations on February 1, 1913. It's the third cannery on the Pacific Coast.[2] The company's reasoning for choosing San Jose was because it produced "one-third of the fruit [was both] harvested in the state of California and within a radius of 40 miles of" the city. In 1920, the plant purchased its neighboring property to the north and would go on to expand and build a new warehouse. It took until 1926 to complete it. The plant primarily manufactured tin cans for packers ranging from Produce, Dairy products, Pet food, Flour, and Frozen food. In the 1950s, the plant hired a peak of approximately 500 employees. In 1957, the plant helped American Can produce its 10 billionth can. The company is believed to have ceased operations on September 1, 1965 due to the packers being able to manufacture cans themselves.[3]

Plant's Impact During World War I and World War II

[edit]

American Can Company started hiring women during both World wars and made hand grenades, land mines, TNT containers, machine gun ammunition boxes, and food out of Tinplate.

Hubert Humphrey

[edit]

Steeley Hubert Humphrey Jr. (born February 1942) (b/k/a Hubert Humphrey) is an American businessman, insurance executive, insurance agent and entrepreneur. He is well-known for founding and leading World Marketing Alliance (WMA) (n/k/a World Financial Group): in 1991, and is currently the CEO and chairman of Hegemon Group International.

Early life and education

[edit]

Humphrey was born in 1942 in Macon, Georgia to life and accident insurance agent and World War II Sergeant Steeley Hubert Humphrey, Sr (father). and June Smith Humphrey (mother).[54]

Humphrey is a graduate of Central High School (Macon, Georgia) (p/k/a Lanier Miller High School) in 1960.[55] Humphrey attended Georgia Tech to study Engineering for one year[56][57], but dropped out because he and his wife anticipated the birth of their first son.[58][59]

Humphrey worked as a railroad conductor for Southern Railway (U.S.) for the next seventeen years.[59] Among his tasks included driving along the Central of Georgia Railway and "wav[ed]... lantern[s] and directed trains around Macon, Georgia[60][57]

Insurance Agency Career

[edit]

A.L. Williams

[edit]

Humphrey worked at A.L. Williams (n/k/a Primerica) after leaving the Southern Railway first as an agent. While at the company, Humphrey moved up the ranks to as high as national sales director in 1978. At the peak of his career, Humphrey's consisted of, at most, "50,000 people under him" and took home more than $3 million per year.[58]

World Marketing Alliance (WMA)

[edit]

In 1991, Humphrey left Primerica to start World Marketing Alliance. The reasoning for this move was because he was "irked by Primerica's clampdown on commissions from insurance polices".[58] In 2001, select assets of WMA were sold to Dutch insurance company Aegon and the company was renamed to, what is today, World Financial Group.

World Leadership Group (WLG) and Hegemon Group International

[61][62]

Awards

[edit]

Humphrey was inducted to the Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame[59]

La Reve

[edit]

Humphrey and his wife built a 3-storey, 47,000 square-foot mansion in Cumming, Georgia.[63][64][65][66] The mansion contained a total of 82 rooms all including a garage with up to 12 cars, 72 televisions screens[67], "two-lane bowling alley, private nine-hole golf course and movie theater modeled after the Fox Theatre (Atlanta)",[68]17 bathrooms, 2 swimming pools, "a replica of the old Central of Georgia Railway (where Hubert first worked at)", and a "'50s diner with a full service soda fountain and black and white tile floors".[60]

The couple hosted Mitt Romney in 2007[69] and the Rotary Club's Lanier-Forsyth chapter.[67]

La Reve was described as "an air of elegance and success".[67]

The property went into foreclosure in 2008-2009 and the couple sold the house at the same year initially for $50 million.[70]

Personal life

[edit]

Humphrey married to insurance agent: Norma Wynelle Patrick in July 26, 1961.[71][72] The couple has four children together: Jody (son) and Jeffrey (son).[58] Their eldest son, Jody is Hegemon Group International's National Leadership Development Officer and is on the company's executive board.

Humphrey is a Mormon and serves as a bishop.

Jacqueline Ma (born February 10, 1989) is a former American elementary school teacher and convicted child groomer.

Early life and Education

[edit]

Ma was born in Orange County, California.[74] Ma graduated with both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Education degree from the University of California, San Diego.[75]

Career

[edit]

Ma taught elementary/multiple subjects to Fifth graders and Sixth graders at Lincoln Acres Elementary School in National City, California from 2013-2022, and also served as a technology site liaison[76]. Ma helped both "colleagues and students engage successfully with the technology" during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to one of her coworkers, Ma "was able to find various techniques on her Google Meets to help engage the students while presenting on her screen". In the 2021-22 academic year, Ma received National School District Teacher of the Year.[77] In the following academic year, Ma was among the five teachers chosen by the San Diego County Board of Education for its Teacher of the Year award.[75]

The People of the State of California v. Jacqueline Ma

[edit]

On March 7, 2023, Ma was arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with a former 12-year old student of hers, for the first time, and was booked into Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility (LCDRF) (located in Santee, California) for "suspicion of... committing a lewd and lascivious act on a child under the age of 14".[78] After posting $100,000 bail, Ma was rearrested the next day for "suspicion of... committing a lewd and lascivious act on a child under 14, sexual exploitation of a child, possession of child pornography and preventing or dissuading a witness"[79], and was denied bail ever since. Ma was charged with up to a total of 21 felony counts[80] of "lewd acts on a child, seduction of a minor, possession of child pornography, and other offenses" against 2 former students: the, aforementioned, 12-year old and the 11-year old. The National City Police Department discovered "a photograph of the victim in her wallet and jewelry with her initials, alnog with lover letter to the child in her classroom."[81][82][83] The National School District placed Ma on unpaid status as a result of the detainment[84].

At the preliminary hearing, Ma had a months-long relationship the included events, according to the San Diego County District Attorney office, sent "'illicit' photographs of herself and [asked] one of the boys to do the same, and also directing him to record himself engaged in sex acts at home", "sent sexually charged messages" to the second victim, caused the 2nd victim to flee when Ma "removed her shirt... and moved in close" to him. Ma was ordered to stand trial at the end of that day.[85]

On February 5, 2025, Ma pleaded guilty (via plea bargain) to a total of four felony counts: two counts of lewd acts with a child under age 14, one count of forcible lewd acts with a child under age 14[80][86], and one count of possession of child pornography. Ma was sentenced to serve between thirty years to life in California State Prison on May 9, 2025. In other words, Ma is eligible for a parole hearing after serving thirty years into her sentence. In addition, Ma is also required to register as a sex offender if her parole is granted.[87]

As a result of the conviction, The National School District moved to terminate Ma's employment[84].

Firepower Records

[edit]

Firepower Records is an American independent electronic music record label founded in January 2012[88][89] by Canadian DJ and music producer Datsik in Los Angeles, California. The label is home to artists such as Bear Grillz, Getter, Protohype, and Terravita.

According to former co-owner and label manager Sharra Grace Duggan, Datsik started the label to accommodate the increasing and burdensome quantity of music submissions he received from new and established artists, and to provide a place for them "to put music out that [Datsik] was really feeling and inspired by" and "that their opinions and ideas were important and not just pushed aside".[90][91][92]

In December 2012, the label partnered with Ultra Music Festival to showcase a mix, DJ'd by Datsik, consisting of the label's current discography.[93]

The company was incorporated as a Limited liability company (LLC) on May 23, 2014.[1]

In March 2018, Datsik stepped down from Firepower Records, and handed control and operations over to Duggan (or delegated to members of the label's personnel) amid numerous sexual misconduct allegations.[94][95] In April 14, 2022, Datsik regained control and ownership of the label via the record label's recent filing to the Secretary of State of California[2]

While the record label has not made any official announcement addressing its inactivity, it hasn't legally dissolved via its recent filing, thus, making the label inactive instead.[96]
