There are two types of processing within the elaboration likelihood model: central processing and peripheral processing. When a message is processed through peripheral routes, the receiver does not have to think elaborately when making a decision. However, when a message is processed through central routes, receivers are more engaged and they use critical thinking skills when making a decision. [1]
