CleanPowerSF is the City and County of San Francisco’s Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program. Administered by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and monitored by the San Francisco Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo), which is chaired by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, the goal of the program is to significantly increase the amount of energy from renewable sources supplied to the San Francisco electrical grid [1] in order to meet and eventually exceed California's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) laws which require California electricity corporations to expand their renewable portfolio by 1% each year until reaching 20% in 2010 and 33% in 2020. [2]. San Francisco’s current electrical supplier, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), to date has been unable to meet the California RPS. [3] Currently, the SFPUC is in negotiations with Power Choice LLC, the energy service provider for CleanPowerSF, to determine the final logistics of the program [4] Once the logistics are finalized, the residents of San Francisco will have the choice to participate in this program or revert back to receiving energy generated by PG&E. [5] CleanPowerSF is the second CCA program to be implemented in California, the first being Marin Clean Energy in Marin County. [6]
