"Substance use disorder"

c-class, level 4, 3 wiki projects (addictions & recovery, medicine/psychiatry, pharmacology)

On using the word "abuse": it's acknowledged that there is "no universally accepted definition of substance abuse", also reflects on the differences between "substance abuse", "substance dependence", and "drug addiction"...a couple paragraphs later, "substance use as a spectrum" is a introduced, noting that "abuse" has problematic connotations especially in the public health domain...it could be useful to move this up higher in the section before going off and using the "abuse" several times.

- It also says "See diagram lower left " and I don't see the diagram

- Entire "Signs and Symptoms" needs citations

On "severity": "Substance use disorders range can range ..." is an ugly sentence lol

- Take out "only" for the mild descriptor

On "detoxification": benzodiazepines are also incredibly dangerous to withdraw from. Maybe add more than just alcohol warning...

On "Therapy"

- "Therapists often classify people with chemical dependencies as either interested or not interested in changing." - NEEDS A CITATION ,what?

- Citation #20, on quantity of relapse and who seeks treatment is from 2000, an incredibly outdated article considering the opioid epidemic

On "Management

- is it too far out to mention 12-step fellowships? Rehabs? Detox wards? Intensive Out-patient? Church organizations? Interventions? Drug court? Maintenance drugs like suboxone and methadone (MAT)?

Edits to add 2/22

Bauman and Briggs say that recontextualisation (and contextualisation) depend upon "the social economy of texts" (cite 76). Recontextualisation and recentering is culturally and socially situated, therefore it is bound in socially produced norms and structures including, but not limited to, power differentials. Bauman and Briggs claim that recontextualisation of texts includes a varying amount of control that depends on access, legitimacy, competency and value (Cite 77) . Access can be shaped by institutional structures. An example of legitimacy are standards about plagarism, such as: is the text original work? Where has it been decontextulised from? Is the original or recontextualised source legitimate? Competency is the "knowledge and ability to carry out the decontextualisation and recontextualisation of performed discourse successfully and appropriately" (76). Was the act done well and what factors contribute for this execution to be received as well done? This can include cultural competency, understanding of the meaning of a text to a specific cultural context. Value is contingent on the social importance of the text. What is it worth? This is a broad understanding of worth and not limited by economic, monetary "value". Access, legitimacy, competency and value are all culturally situated social constructions that vary among contexts. Therefore the manner in which each of these elements are embodied in act of recontextualisation can and will vary.
