The Center of Computing and Data Science (CDS) is one of the degree-granting schools within Boston University with the goal of integrating education and research in the field of data science. The school offers an Bachelor of Science in Data Science, a Minor in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Computing and Data Science.

After being originally announced on October 1st, 2019, Boston University launched the data science major officially and started providing classes in the Fall of 2021.[1][2]

Building

[edit]

The CDS is housed in a building that shares its name. Located at 645-665 Commonwealth Avenue, construction of the building began in the winter of 2019 and opened at the end of the 2022.[3][4]

The building consists of 19 floors, totaling at a height of 305 feet. It holds the faculty of CDS, the Computer Science and the Mathematics & Statistics department from the College of Arts and Sciences, BU Spark!, and the Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering.[4] The first two floors hold administrative offices. Floors 3-5 hold the Mathematics & Statistics department while floors 6-10 hold the Computer Science department. The next 6 floors holds the Hariri Institute. The top floor and basement is used to hold equipment.[1]

The building is designed with a geothermal system to provide heating and cooling, with no reliance on fossil fuels to help Boston University reach a net-zero carbon production.[5][6]

It was designed by KPMB Architects, and made to look like a stack of books.[7]

Undergraduate Program

[edit]

As of November of 2022, CDS offers a single Bachelors of Science in Data Science. The major can be completed through two different tracks: in-the-field and methodology. The in-the-field track allows students to develop expertise in a domain. The methodology track has a stronger focus on the theoretical aspect of data science.[8]

CDS also offers a Minor in Data Science. To qualify, a student must have fulfilled the prerequisite of an introductory computer science course, either from CDS, the College of Arts and Sciences, or the College of Engineering.[9]

CDS does not offer any dual degrees with the other Boston University colleges.[10]

Graduate Program

[edit]

CDS only offers a Ph.D. in Computing and Data Science.[11]
