[edit]Fazal-ur-Rehman (born June 19, 1953) is a Pakistani politician and Islamic scholar who has been the president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) (JUI-F), a prominent religious political party in Pakistan. He is known for his influence in religious circles and his role in Pakistani parliamentary politics.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Fazal-ur-Rehman was born in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He is the son of Mufti Mahmud, a respected Islamic scholar and former Chief Minister of the province. Fazal-ur-Rehman received his early education at Jamia Qasim Ul Uloom and later pursued higher Islamic education. He has also studied at Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
Political Career
[edit]Fazal-ur-Rehman entered politics through the platform of JUI and inherited his father's political legacy. In 1988, he was elected as a Member of the National Assembly. Over the decades, he has served multiple terms in the National Assembly and remained active in forming religious alliances such as the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA).
He is known for advocating Islamic laws, opposing Western military presence in the region, and maintaining strong relations with conservative religious communities.
Role in Pakistani Politics
[edit]As the head of JUI-F, Fazal-ur-Rehman has been a prominent voice on issues such as the protection of Islamic values in legislation, opposition to liberal secular policies, and criticism of military influence in politics. He has led multiple protest movements, most notably the 2019 "Azadi March" against the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Controversies and Criticism
[edit]He has been criticized by opponents for his shifting alliances and for allegedly using religious rhetoric for political gain. Nonetheless, his party holds significant influence, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Personal Life
[edit]Fazal-ur-Rehman leads a relatively private life and is known for his traditional dress and religious speeches. He is fluent in Pashto, Urdu, and Arabic.
