Eleven fifty niner (11:59) is a term that is used to refer to a late work submission by a student. It simply means that an assignment is submitted at the very last minute before it is due just like this article, which was an assignment for a Mechatronics class at the University of Waterloo, Ontario by Karim Kawambwa, an first year undergrad student from Tanzania.
Origin of 11:59
[edit]The origin of the term is unknown however Karim Kawambwa did witness its use in High School by the upper year International Baccalaureate (IB) students during there last year. The High school was situated in Mombasa Kenya called The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. The students are workers however the workload of IB did proved to be a challenge and hence assignments would be submitted at the very last minute or rather, the very last second. This phrase became common and my class also adopted this 11:59 habit, which did work but one must be equipped with many skills such as on the stop essay writing.
The phrase came about when teachers requested work to be submitted by midnight. Therefore, due to procrastination, everyone would wait until the last minute to start the work, and then they would end up submitting the work by 11:59 (phew!).
Corrupt File vs 11:59
[edit]This term lives on to university and can be implemented anywhere, be it employment or schoolwork. It is one of the biggest survival skills due to procrastination. The feeling of success, submitting that essay done in 59 minutes due to time wasted looking up memes. However after the last year IB students completed and received their Diploma’s, the next year (i.e. my class) came up with a new method of survival and that was simply a corrupted.
A friend, who shall not be named, was working late and the deadline was approaching at an alarming rate if that was even possible (This time warp where time slowed down or boosted was in certain lessons that shall not be mentioned. Time would either go slow or really fast). So what he did was submit a corrupted file of the assignment and he accomplished this by changing the .docx file to .pdf. The next day he would argue that the fie works and he submitted on time hence he would resubmit his finished work with the more time that he had (success!).
