Buwanga Way to Health Foundation
[edit]The Buwanga Way to Health Foundation was founded in 2020, registered in 2022 and recognized as an incorporated NGO in 2023.[1] The organization is located in the Manafwa District of the Eastern Republic of Uganda. The community of Manafwa faces numerous difficulties because of its geographical location, which has adversely affected the community’s living conditions. The foundation helps disadvantaged people acquire food and other basic life necessities as well as providing medical care and outreach health education.[1]
The Organization

[edit]The Buwanga Way to Health Foundation is directed by its founder Andrew Wefwafwa, a medical clinical officer who specializes in community medicine and community health.[2] Wefwafwa is also a singer, environmental activist, and YouTube content creator.[2][3] Andrew Wefwafwa Medical Videos joined YouTube in 2017, producing health education lectures and music videos,[3] and shifted focus towards disease outbreaks and COVID-19 when the pandemic began.[4] In 2021, Wefwafwa began covering topics about his work in medical relief and support for underserved communities.[5] Wefwafwa continues to provide regular reports on the activities and progress of the Buwanga Way to Health Foundation[6] as well as updates on COVID-19, Ebola outbreaks and other diseases in Africa.[7]
Headquarters
[edit]The Buwanga Way to Health Foundation is based in the Manafwa district in Eastern Uganda. It is situated on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, bordering Kenya.[1] The foundation gathered enough international donations to purchase large parcels of land and is in the process of building a community outreach complex. The first purchase of land was made in 2021, securing 60,000 square feet for a large organic community garden and an office building with a guest house.[8] Since then, more land has been purchased and is used to grow vegetables and fruit trees for the workers and greater community. This land will also be the location of a staff house, a medical facility and a mill house.[9][10][11]
Community Outreach Projects
[edit]Medical Care
[edit]Andrew Wefwafwa and helpers travel to villages in need around Uganda to offer medical care, medicine and medical devices to individuals struggling with health problems.[12][13] While in the villages, they supply seedings for fruits and vegetables that will help the entire community eat well in the future.[12][14]
Health Care Education
[edit]The foundation provides health education to community members, empowering people to make better health choices and live together in peace.[1] Mefwafwa teaches people about a range of important health topics such as disease safety, kidney health, eye care and nutrition.[15][16][17]
Providing Basic Needs and Disaster Relief
[edit]The foundation supports the poor individually with necessities for daily living. For example, they installed a solar panel on the roof of a lady’s home so that she could have electricity, and community workers built a bathroom. Providing washrooms is very important for preventative healthcare because proper disposal of fecal matter reduces the spread of diseases such as Cholera and Ebola.[18] The foundation also supports an abandoned boy, Ben, by providing food, clothing and paying for his school fees.[19] They support ongoing community needs like providing people with mosquito nets[20] to help prevent Malaria, and they aid communities in crisis. In 2022, they supplied much needed food, water and trees to districts devastated by severe flooding in Mbale and other parts of Eastern Uganda.[21][22]
Health Awareness Events
[edit]The Official Public Launch of the Buwanga Way to Health Foundation and One Day Medical Camp, Sept. 16, 2022
[edit]As part of the foundation’s official launch, free health care and medical check ups were provided for the people of Manafwa and surrounding area. Medical services included reproductive health, pharmaceutical, eye/ear/nose/throat checkups, dental and orthopaedic treatments. A 60-member volunteer medical team assisted 2500 patients during the one day medical camp.[23]
World Sight Day, October 12-13, 2022
[edit]World Sight Day is a pre-existing day initiated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. The Buwanga Way to Health Foundation offered free eye screening for community members, examining 50 people. Education about eye care and the prevention of Ebola infection was also provided.[24]
Funding
[edit]The foundation receives funding through crowdsourcing efforts managed on JustGiving, Patreon and By Me a Coffee in addition to individual donations received through the organization’s website.[1]
