Kid Cosmic (Character)
[edit]Kid Cosmic (also referred to as Kid) is a fictional Character from the 2D animated Netflix Series of the same name "Kid Cosmic". He was created by Craig McCracken who is best known for creating Dexter's Laboratory (1996), the Powerpuff Girls (1998), Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (2004) and Wander Over Yonder (2013) [1]. He is one of the Main Protagonists of the show who tries to become a superhero after discovering 5 special stones from a crashed spaceship. Each stone can give whoever has it in their possession a unique superpower which Kid plans to use to protect earth from possible alien invaders. He lives in a junkyard that sits alongside a desert highway with his grandfather named Papa G and he forms a team with him, two other citizens of the desert town they live in (Jo and Rosa) and his cat, Tuna Sandwich. [2]
History:
[edit]Season 1:
Kid is first seen having found 5 stones (coloured Green, Purple, Blue, Yellow and Red) in the desert late at night near the Junkyard where he lives with his grandpa (called Papa G). He turns each stone into a ring by gluing them onto lug nuts which he then proceeds to show off at the local diner called Mo's Oasis Café owned and run by a woman called Flo. Although everyone believes he's just playing around, Kid announces that he believes these stones contain powers that he will use to protect Earth from Evil Aliens. He experiments with one (the green one) out in the desert while filming his attempts on a old video camera. After so many trail runs, he finally activates one of the rings' powers as he starts to fly around out of control catching the attention of Flo's teenage daughter, Jo. Stunned that the Kid's story is true, she manages to convince Kid to let her have a go at one of the other rings. Kid teaches her how to activate it and they discover that the purple stone ring has the power to open teleportation portals. Not long after, the two are under attack by a large mutant black Dog with a metallic collar followed closely by a skinny alien with a grill like translator (who caused the spaceship carrying the stones to crash on Earth in the first place) demands Kid to hand over the stones of power. Although they struggle, Kid and Jo manage to trap the alien in the floor of Kid's bedroom (which is a camper trailer sitting outside the house in the junkyard) with Jo's teleportation power and trick him into destroying the mutant Dog. The alien, which Jo later gave him the name Stuck Chuck, tells the duo that his Great Leader will be coming and that many alien species will be after the stones. This prompts Kid to announce he will recruit a team of heroes who will help him defend the earth from those who wish to do them harm and convinces Jo to be his first recruit. They keep their superhero activities a secret from everyone else for the time being under the cover that Kid is making a space film and Jo is helping him film it.
The next day, one of Kid's neighbour's kid, a young toddler named Rosa wanders into the junkyard looking for kid and comes across one of the rings (The Blue Stone) which cause her to grow into a giant. Kid has always found Rosa annoying from her constant attempts to play with him. So he wasn't happy that she grabbed one of the rings and gets Jo to help him try and get it back. Despite Jo's suggestion to let Rosa keep the ring, the two manage to wrangle back to the junkyard where the get Papa G to help them out. Chuck manages to escape the trailer and tries to get the rings of Kid and the others. Despite falling out with her, Rosa decides to help stop Chuck and defeats him with the help of Papa G who acquires the yellow stone ring which gives the user the ability to clone himself multiple times. Kid makes up with Rosa and allows her to keep the blue stone ring. With Chuck tied up and Papa G and Rosa now part of the team, Kid tries to train them to be heroes like the ones in his comic books. He continues to film teams' progress on his camera for, as Kid puts it, "The Future of Humanity". With one stone left (the red one) and not taking any chances, Kid decides to hide it where no one would think to look. Around the collar of his Cat, Tuna Sandwich.
Chuck continues to be a nuisance and tries to come up with a plan to summon his Great Leader by tricking Kid and the others to find the space ship as there is some information on the stones that can help them to master their powers better. Jo is reluctant to go along with Chuck's suggestion to visit the ship thinking it's a trap but Kid believe this will help them to become better heroes. So they set off to find the crashed spaceship. While this is happening, the stone suddenly activates around Tuna's neck and a red eye pops up on his forehead. It's revealed that the final stone grants the user the ability to see the future, mostly when something disastrous is about to happen. Due to Kid's kind actions of taking him in when he was a abandoned kitten in the past, Tuna is spurred into action and goes after the team in hopes of saving them. The ragtag team of heroes find the spaceship stuck halfway up a sheer cliff-face and get inside. They are attacked once again by more of the same mutant dog that attacked Kid and Jo earlier but Chuck escapes his bonds and destroys the Dogs with a death ray gun he got his hands on. Holding the heroes at gunpoint, he tries to signal his fleet but is attack by Tuna who has managed to catch up with him. Rosa tries to use her powers to help the cat but her giant weight causes the ship to start sliding down the mountain. It tips over and lands sideways up on a outcrop of rock. Everyone grabs something to hold on to as they dangle high above the ground. Kid finds what is actual a Scared Scroll of the Stones which goes into detail about the origins of the stones of power. But the scroll is stuck in a metal grate and Chuck accidentally activates the ship's self destruct, Jo convinces Kid to leave the scroll behind telling him that they are capable of accomplishing great things together and don't need the scroll. Reluctantly, Kid agrees with Jo and they all leave through one of her portals. Chuck falls after them as the ship explodes and all of them land safely on the ground. But due to the portal closing too soon, Chuck loses everything from the waist down. But with his species, he can survive and continue to live without the need of a waist and legs as all the important organs that keep him alive are in the top part of his body. Kid accepts the team has lost the scroll but he realises that Tuna's powers to see the future and dubs him as the fifth and final member of the team to possess a stone of power.
The team (under the banner "Kid Cosmic and the The Local Heroes") continues to film their adventures on the old camera as Kid begins a routine when one of the members of the team achieve something heroic and or save the day, they receive a medal in a ceremony. Over time everyone gets a medal for their efforts (especially Rosa), but Kid no matter how hard he tries doesn't seem to get a chance to save the day or do something really stand-out heroic. And Chuck's constant put-downs doesn't seem to help matters. But one night while filming his thoughts on the matter, Kid witness a army of Robots invade the junkyard. With everyone else asleep and no time to wake them up, Kid takes it upon himself to defeat the robots by flying into them and knocking them all down. Kid Cosmic is victorious and shows his victory to everyone on the camera playback. Papa G awards him with his own medal and Kid is overjoyed to finally achieve his dream of saving the day. But as he flies around in celebration, the camera is still running to reveal a part of the film Kid never saw that it was Papa G and his Clones that were dressed up as the robot army. Jo is shocked to see this and Papa G reassures her that he felt Kid needed a win due to having such a hard life. Jo understands and promises not to say anything about it but Chuck sees all of this and grabs the footage while no one's watching. One night, the team are having diner at when Kid makes the decision to tell everyone about their powers and their heroic deeds (Still riding on the high of his win). But it is not long before more mutant dogs start attacking the diner and everyone their goes into a panic, Kid Cosmic and his team spring into action shocking everyone there including Flo and Rosa's parents. Kid keeps trying to stop the dogs but is confused that he can't seem to manage it. Jo, Papa G and Rosa step in and manage to figure out a way to stop the dogs by turning off the collars. Everyone except Kid manages to defeat the mutants and save everyone at the diner and the boy gets overlooked as they all celebrate which prompts him to leave. Unfortunately he misses hearing Jo stick up for him by saying if it wasn't for Kid, the team wouldn't exist in the first place. Back at the trailer, Kid tries to stay positive that he had at least one win under his belt but Chuck takes this opportunity to mock him even further and show the footage revealing the robot army he fought was a fake. Chuck pushes Kid to breaking point where he angerly lashes out demanding Chuck to signal his Great Leader as he alone while face him and his army.
In the dead of night, Kid swipes all of the of teams rings for himself and waits in the desert as Chuck's Race arrive. Using the power of all five rings, Kid Cosmic gears up for he battle. He actually does pretty well on his own, swapping and changing the rings around and using all 5 powers. Everyone else wakes up and witness the events in the desert as Kid takes on the fleet. The team try to stop them but Kid is stubborn and refuses to listen. He reveals he knows about the fake fight, believes he no longer needs any help from them and can be a hero on his own. At this point, he puts on all five rings and races to deliver the final blow. But when witnessing a vision of the future of the team in trouble and a vision of a truck speeding right towards him, it freaks him out. Suddenly the power of the rings goes into overload, It becomes too much for him and collapses to the ground. The Great Leader comes forward and grabs the rings off him for himself but more mutant dogs show up and attack the alien. Despite all of Chuck's claims of how great his leader is, it's revealed the figure head is coward and lets the dogs have the rings and retreats to his spaceship and leaves Chuck behind on purpose, not having much regard for the creature. Kid tries to get his rings back from the Dogs, but the become passive and unmoving. The team come to Kid's aid and pull him back as government helicopters arrive and it's revealed that one of the Diner's patrons (A red bearded Biker dressed in black) was a undercover agent for a secret government service which he calls Earth Force Enforcement Force. Holding the team and everyone else who lives near the diner at gunpoint, Jo tries to defend Kid as the Biker takes the rings from the dogs which are revealed to be his. But Kid tells Jo that it's over and accepts defeat.
Ever since Kid found the stones of power, the Biker in Black has been monitoring his every move to see the stones' value. The Biker and his agents had assembled their own team of heroes to use the powers to protect earth from aliens. During the confusion as the team and desert citizens are rounded up and put under guard at the diner as the agents setup their HQ, Kid was able to slip away and ran away out into the desert. For the next few days, no one knows where he has gone and the agents search for him. But as the Earth Force Enforcement Force team gears up to fight as a number of aliens show up, Kid can be seen watching from distance, despondent as he he burns his collection of comics in the campfire he made. But as the fight goes on, he suddenly picks up on something important. The five different aliens that are fighting the Enforcement team have similar powers to the five stones. Kid works out that the aliens may not be bad guys but simply want what was once there's, each stone comes from each of the alien's home-world and they want it back. And the Enforcement team doesn't realise this. Kid makes the decision that even without powers, he still wants to be a hero and do the right thing. So he jumps onto his bike and rides into the battle to try and warn the Enforcement team that the Aliens are villains but nearly gets crushed in the skirmish. Papa G drives in a van with Jo, Rosa, Tuna and Chuck and manages to get Kid out of the fight. Kid and the team make up after their falling out over the fake robot army and the team bring Kid up to speed with what's happened in his absence. Chuck has resolved to become one of the heroes as he finds Kid more brave than his cowardly Great Leader and gives Tuna Sandwich his translator as a sign of good faith. Tuna can now talk and he and Chuck free Rosa, Jo and Papa G from the secret service squad. Tuna reveals he had a vision of Kid cycling into the battle with the Enforcement Force and the aliens which served as a way to track down Kid and reunite with him.
Now reunited as a team, Kid and the others try to come up with a plan to try and warn the Enforcement force and the Biker in Black about the alien's good intentions. After many failed attempts, they make it into the Biker's HQ. Kid explains to the Biker that the Aliens are the good guys but the Biker dismiss Kid's words and is more focused on making Earth a planet and force to be feared by other races in the universe. He detains the the Local Heroes as the Aliens are overpowered and chucked into a portable prison container by the Enforcement team. The team and the Biker in Black escort the container back to HQ as the Local Heroes are escorted out. Chuck gets into a fight with the guards and uses one of their guns to hit one of the Enforcement team members, the one carrying the Green Stone. He falls in front of the HQ and the Stone falls out of his possession. With Chuck's Encouragement, Kid grabs his stone back and flies off drawing the attention of the other Enforcement members. The Local Heroes manage to slip away and free the Aliens. Due to Kid's unpredictable and wild control of the stone's power, he flies circles around the Enforcement team and they can't stop him. Suddenly the Biker in Black drives the Mobile HQ towards the local heroes and aliens with the intent to drive into them and kill them all. This was the vision Kid had when he had the red stone back when he was fighting the Great Leader's army and he flies towards his friends in hopes of saving them. It is then, he has a flashback to when he was little and his parents got run over by a track with him in the car (the second vision he had earlier on). In a panic, Kid yells out "NO!" and suddenly a surge of energy from the stone causes everyone to fly up into the air and gets suspended in the sky. According to one of the aliens, the green stone actually holds the power of telekinesis, the ability to move things around with your mind. Kid wasn't actually flying, he was moving himself around in the air with his mind and thought he was flying because he thought it would look cool. The Bike in Black becomes impressed with this that Kid was able to discover the green stone's real power and is about to make a show of inviting Kid to be on the his team. But Kid immediately rejects him before he even finishes uttering the words and comes to the conclusion that Heroes help not hurt. So with a better understanding of his powers, Kid summons up enough energy to retrieve the other four stones back from the Enforcement team and slowly lower everyone down to the ground.
Kid hands back the stones to the aliens as they reveal they are each solo survivors of the home-worlds which has been destroyed by a strange planet which is known as Erodious, the Planet Killer. Each of the stones are the only remnants of each of the alien's home-world and carries the abilities of the local population. For example, a purple Jellyfish-like Alien named Queen Xhan has the ability to teleport herself around comes from the planet the purple stone originates from. The aliens are grateful for the Local Heroes help of retrieving the stones and while catching the attention of the rest of the desert locals that are now free from the Biker's hold. Everyone heads back to the Diner for breakfast and Kid invites the Earth Force Enforcement Force to join them despite their previous actions and they accept. The Biker in Black is left in the desert to sulk, not wanting to join as everyone heads to Mo's Oasis Café.
6 months later, Kid and Papa G having been helping out at the diner to keep the business running much to the delight of Flo. Kid is content with being a hero in his own way since he no longer has his powers. Suddenly a portal opens in the sky and Queen Xhan falls through landing in a heap on the ground. It's revealed after saying goodbye to the Local Heroes, she and the rest of the aliens had tracked down Erodious and tried to stop it but failed. The planet killer wiped out everyone except her and Xhan asks Kid Cosmic if he and the rest of the Local Heroes would help aid her in her quest to find a way to defeat Erodious which will involve tracking down more stones of power. Xhan reveals that there are 13 stones in total which means there are 8 more stones yet to be found. Kid tells Xhan that Jo is the leader of the Local Heroes and the decision falls to her. Caught by surprise, Jo nervously accepts and Xhan uses the last of her powers to teleport the whole diner and surrounding area into deep space with a air shield to protect them. Kid is overjoyed that the team are going on a space quest.
Season 2:
A few weeks have passed since the closing moments of the season 1 finale and Mo's Oasis café has become a Intergalactic truck stop for many space-faring aliens and the Stones of Power have been turned into rings again. Kid, who once again wears the green stone ring, has become a delivery boy for the diner and using his powers he is able to fly through space delivering meals to various planets. spaceships and space stations. Although Kid starts to grow impatient to get started on the quest to find more stones of power to defeat Erodious. When he asks Jo about this, it's revealed she is avoiding the topic and is apprehensive about making a start. Queen Xhan comforts the boy telling him that when the time is right, Jo will be ready to step up as the Local Heroes Leader. And that time happens sooner than they expect as later on while making another delivery, Kid gets kidnapped and has his ring stolen by a fanboy alien named Fantos who is super obsessed about Erodious. He shows Kid his large collection of Erodious memorabilia which includes a copy of the Scared Scroll of the Stones, a more worn down duplicate of the original scroll Kid had found from the crashed spaceship back on Earth. Not planning on taking over the universe, Fantos is more focused on completing his collection by recovering all the stones of power himself and protect the legacy of Erodious. He calls the Diner to let Jo and the others know that Kid is captured and he demands they hand over the other 4 stones for the boy's safety. Jo, Papa G, Rosa and Tuna Sandwich arrive to try and rescue Kid Cosmic but due to the fact that Fantos has a couple stones of power himself (which he wears in a specially designed armour to house all 13 stones) he quickly proves to be a more formidable foe. The fight turns into a big scuffle where all the stones get mixed up. All the local heroes struggle to get the upper hand with Jo panicking that she's unable to lead the group and grabbing any stone they can get their hands on, the team flee back to the diner. Everyone has their original stone of power back but Kid unfortunately loses his green stone during the fight. Jo tried to get it back for him but was overpowered by Fantos and was unable to do so. So instead he gets stuck with one of the two new stones the team was able to recover from the fight, a light green stone that gives Kid the power to turn into goo which he really hates. The other new stone (which gives the user to have four arms) is in possession of Flo as she needs the extra arm power to run her Diner. Kid was able to snatch the Scared scroll without Fantos knowing. On it are details on how the team can find the other stones of power so on the bright side, Kid has provided the Local Heroes the info they need to start their quest.
Their first stop according to the scroll is on a beach world where a large pyramid floats above the ground, constantly rotating with no visible sign of entry. The local heroes and Flo (with her new power, joins up to show support for her daughter) end up spending 20 days trying to find a way in with no avail. During one of the attempts, Kid is teleported to the top of the pyramid but struggles to hang on. He ends up sliding down the side and falls off but he manages to turn into goo to break his fall. When Jo becomes despondent, Kid tries to cheer her up by making snot and goo jokes in his Goo form. But in the process gets sucked into a narrow hole in the ground, thankfully the team manages to save him just in time. They discover the hole is a coin slot of some kind and after finding many coins dotted around the beach, the team gain access to the pyramid. It soon becomes clear that the pyramid is some sort of puzzle house and to reach the new stone, they have to solve each of them. Kid constantly throughout the journey triggers the traps each puzzle has but thanks to his goo powers and Flo's four arm ability, he has been able to survive each one. Jo tries to skip over the puzzle to get each of the Local Heroes to use their powers to cheat the puzzles. They reach the room where the stone is kept and as they recover it, the final trap occurs and the room closes in on everyone and deadly lasers criss-cross the room. Jo was able to escape and goes back to solve all the puzzle to deactivate the final trap and free everyone.
Over time, the team collect more and more stones on their quest and more of the regular diner patrons (who got swept up in this adventure from earth) acquire their powers. One stone was in possession of a Space Arena fighter named Krosh which Jo (who was going through some self doubt about being strong enough to defeat Erodious and be a leader) goes up against and wins. She grabs the stone from Krosh and earns her respect. The two team up to train the rest of the expanding team of the Local Heroes. Kid is enthusiastic about learning what he can and trying to make use of what powers he has but has even more trouble fighting with the goo stone than he did with the telekinesis stone. It is not long before Fantos arrives at the Intergalactic Truck Stop to try and take the stones for himself. Jo and Krosh fight him together and succeed to defeat him, send him packing and grab all of his stones too. Now the heroes have all 13 stones and Kid is overjoyed by the prospect of reuniting with his old stone at last but Jo has other plans. She decides that since she and Krosh work so well together, the two will go and defeat Erodious on their own. Kid is shocked and demands why is Jo breaking the team which leads to an argument where Jo blurts out that she thinks Kid and the others suck at being heroes. She believes that she is doing the right thing and leaves with Krosh. Kid is heartbroken and is guided back to the diner with the others. Kid goes through the seven stages of grief and ends up getting worked up which leads to him making a mess in the diner. After a time out to collect his thoughts, he calms down accepts the situation and cleans up the diner before heading to bed. As he prepares to go to sleep, a portal opens up and Jo appears telling Kid that her plan to defeat Erodious with Krosh has failed, Fantos has found them, kills Krosh and takes all the stones for himself. Krosh interrupts Jo to mock Kid and closes up the portal on him, cutting him off from Jo. Kid races back to the diner to let everyone know what has happened. Fantos banishes Jo through a portal to another world while he opens up another to lead Erodious to destroy the Truck Stop. Kid and the others are helpless to fight but by the surprise of everyone a space armada arrives to help defend the truck stop. The armada consists of aliens who have been treated well and cared for by Flo and her staff during their visits to the diner and are more than happy to defend the truck stop and it's people. Jo is among them as she was rescued by one of the aliens and leads the armada to destroy Erodious. Fantos is on the planet killer's surface and gets caught up in the destruction and loses the 13 stones again which Joe grabs before heading back to the Diner, reuniting with her mum and the other and apologising for her behaviour. Now back together again, The Local Heroes head to erodious and uses their stones of power to defeat the planet killer. Kid's happiness to be back in the action is short lived when he discovers the stone he was given was accidentally the goo stone again. Frustrated, Kid tries to track down who has his stone as Jo makes the discovery that the planet killer is actually made up of stones of power and there are plenty more for the team to use to defeat Erodious. Excited, Kid tries to track down another green telekinesis stone. He and Fantos spot one and race to grab it but Fantos reaches it first and using it's power in a fit of rage, grabs all the stones again, sends the local heroes and the intergalactic truck stop patrons back to Earth. And on top of all of that, after Erodious destroys the now empty truck stop, opens a portal so the planet killer's next target is Earth. Kid gets frustrated and chucks off his belt in anger to reveal a clump full of stones had got caught in his pouch. Everyone scrambles to grab a stone and Kid finds a huge rock which contains the goo power. He trips and falls down a crack in the ground in goo form and disappears only to suddenly burst out of the ground again. Kid comes to the realisation what the power of goo can be used for. Breaking the rock into small stones he hands a piece out to everyone and forming a plan with Jo (who has managed to find another purple teleport stone), the heroes use the power of goo to borrow deep into the planet towards the core and cause it to explode, saving Earth in the process. The team arrive back on earth just as another government team arrives. Kid assumes it's the Biker in Black again but instead they are meet by three woman agents who are part of a group called the PPG. The Biker in Black was a rogue agent which they dismiss quickly and proceed to thank Kid Cosmic and the Local Heroes for saving the earth. They are grateful for their actions but in doing so, the team had accidentally caused stones of power to rain down on the earth from Erodious' destruction. So they are all recruited to help the PPG find and recover all the stones and renamed the "Kid Cosmic and the Global Heroes". Kid manages to find another green Telekinesis stone and regains his old powers much to his delight and he is excited about becoming a hero on a global scale. [3]
Development:
[edit]Kid Cosmic was originally a character in a comic strip that Craig McCracken back in 2009. where the character was just an odd boy who dreamt of becoming a hero. The character was inspired by Craig's own childhood past. He wanted to focus on the dynamics of what a hero is in the eyes of a child and his fantasy and the reality of what it takes to become one. It was going to be a different take on the superhero genre. This is what Kid Cosmic's character journey was going to be over the course of the first season of the show. To learn that being a hero is very much different to what he had dream so often about.
He also wanted the takeaway from the show to be that heroes help other in need, not cause fights and punch people around. Which is also what Kid learns in the climax of the Season 1 finale. And doesn't matter what age or gender or background you have, you can be a hero with or without powers. [4]
Craig crafted each season of the shows to explore different ideas on what it takes to be a Hero. Each season would focus on a different character and the journey they go through. Kid was first to take centre stage in the shows first season and his story arc is that heroes help others instead of hurting them. While the second season focused on Jo and her story arc to learn that Heroes care for others and what happens to them.[5] While not centre stage in season 2, Kid is a secondary protagonist and comes up with the solution that saves the day in the season finale.
Casting:
When the pilot for Kid Cosmic was made, The role of Kid was originally played by child actor, Nicolas Cantu. Craig thought he was incredibly talented and right for the role but since production took so long to get started and for the series to be picked up by a network, he had to recast. Nicolas's voice had changed due to puberty during the long period of time between the pilot and the first season.[6] So the production team had to find another actor to play Kid and soon Jack Fisher was cast in the role.[2] Nicolas was able to come back and take part in the show as another character which appeared in season 2, an alien called Ensign Mainstay. Craig was happy that Nicolas was able to re-join the cast and take part in the show.[6]
