Justin Sheriff is a RIAA Platinum-certified.[1][2] American audio engineer, music producer, educator, and social media personality. He is known for his work with major artists like DMX, Run-D.M.C., and Chief Keef[3], as well as his role as an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music.[4] Sheriff’s engineering credits include viral hits like Stellar’s "Ashes,"[5] as well as high-profile commercial projects across music, film, and media. In addition to his studio work, Sheriff has developed a significant online following across platforms like Instagram[6] and YouTube[7].
Early Life and Education
[edit]Justin Sheriff was a founding member of the Portsmouth-based band People Like You,[8] where he played keyboards and served as the band’s producer. Sheriff later also Berklee College of Music[9] in Boston, graduating in 2016 with a dual major in Music Production & Engineering and Electronic Production & Design. During his time at Berklee, he began interning at Cybersound Recording Studios in Boston in 2012.[10]
Audio Engineering Career
[edit]At Cybersound Studios, Sheriff rose to become the studio’s head audio engineer. Over his career, he has worked on numerous projects spanning music, film, and media. Sheriff has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including hip-hop stars like like DMX, Run-D.M.C., and Chief Keef[3]. He recorded the song "Ashes" by Stellar, which went viral on TikTok in 2020, and hit Spotify's Viral 50 chart, followed by the U.S. Viral 50, the Global Viral 50, and then hitting the top 20 on Billboard's Alternative Rock sales chart before the end of the year[11]
Beyond music recording, Sheriff has provided audio post-production for major commercial projects, including mixing and sound design for the introduction video of Billboard’s Women in Music Awards in 2018.[11]
Berklee College of Music and Teaching
[edit]In addition to his studio career, Justin Sheriff is an educator. He joined the faculty of Berklee College of Music (his alma mater) and is an Assistant Professor in Berklee’s Music Production & Engineering department. In this role, Sheriff teaches courses related to audio engineering and music production, including Recording and Mixing Techniques, Audio and MIDI Production, Advanced Recording and Editing Techniques, and other hands-on production courses that prepare students for professional studio work.[12]
