From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anne de Vries (The Hague, 1977) is a Dutch Artist working with a wide range of media such as photography, digital media, painting, installation art, sculpture, performance and video art.

Digital Photography

[edit]

De Vries became more known in 2009 due to his unconventional use of photography in sculptures. In 2010 the artist used the term 'extended-photography' [1] whereby digital photography and computer manipulation are used to make spatial artworks.

  • Curator and writer Charlotte Cotton writes in her publication "The photograph in Contemporary art" (3rd edition gepubliceerd door Thames & Hudson): “Anne de Vries works with photography, sculpture and new media. He brilliantly combines the modernist conventions of sculpture and installation art with visual motifs that reference advertising and amateur photography. His work distills contemporary visual culture into sculptural experiences that operate as philosophical abstractions of technological experience.”[2]
  • Curator and writer Melanie Bühler describes for Winterthur Museum situations[3] as: "De Vries provides detailed information of the technological infrastructure required[4]" and in her article "What I talk about when I talk about Photography" as: "When we look at a photograph, we look at an amalgam of light that has become data, data that has been layered with code, code that has been transformed by software, an image that has been visualized and formatted on (touch) screens and that may or may not be printed on any number of physical materials. One artwork that deals with this layered reality of the photographic image, as a hybrid bundle of code and light, visualization and software, devices and objects is Anne de Vries’s Image Transfers – Apple, Pear and Banana."[5]
  • Art critic and writer Pablo Larios in Frieze Magazine describes in his article Products go crazy as: "Photoshop is no metaphor here, since the relationship between visual editing software and objecthood is blurred – for example, in Anne de Vries’s sculptures of Photoshopped images: Steps of Recursion (2011)"[6]

Post-Internet

[edit]

In 2010 is Anne de Vries associated with the first wave of Post-Internet art partly because De Vries contributed to the publication: POST INTERNET SURVIVAL GUIDE 2010 by Katja Novitskova and duo-exhibition with artist Yngve Holen + publication: TruEYE surView [7] curated by Katja Novitskova in de tentoonstellingsruimte W139 in Amsterdam. [8]

  • Curator Katja Novitskova describes de work of De Vries as: "The works by Anne de Vries offer access to our increasing entanglement with technology - its material and symbolic origins, our sense of the world as part of the universe and our expanding understanding of the laws of physics through different media. Where new technologies are influencing our perceptions of the world, with all its sociopolitical implications."[1]

New-Materialism

[edit]

In 2013 is Anne de Vries associated with New-Materialism in art, partly because De Vries curated the exhibition 'Unstable Media' at Martin van Zomeren[9] and a lecture at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam around the theme 'New-Materialism' in contemporary art.[10] Similar exhibitions that took place that presented his work are 'Material World' in NEST[11] curated by Nanda Jansen. and the exhibition: Asdzą́ą́ Nádleehé gecureed by Timur Si-Qin at Andrea Rosen gallery in New York in 2015.[12] and the solo exhibition: "The (s)Oil we eat" again at Martin van Zomeren

  • Art critic David Andrew Tasman describes in his review: "Anne de Vries makes work about how “new technologies are influencing our perceptions of the world.” and "he works closely with mediums he transfigures with ecological concepts and strategies"[13]

Music and Mass culture

[edit]

The work of Anne de Vries has regularly referred to mass-culture and electronic (dance)music. In the 9th Berlin Biennale for contemporary art there was a work from De Vries titled: 'Oblivion' This artwork consisted of a diorama of a dance music stage, including miniature VJ light show and promotional posters and the infrastructure of an open-air festival. For the miniature DJ set De Vries combined music samples (in collaboration with several producers such as: 'Lorenzo Senni') combined with voice-overs from philosophical texts that connect with the cultural themes of electronic (dance)music such as the influence of technology on the future and the social political dimensions of post-humanism. The art video: 'Critical Mass : Pure Immanence' is also in line with this, and was developed in collaboration with Q-dance and exhibited at Nuit Blanche 2017 at the Micheline-Ostermeyer stadium in Paris. In 2016 the artist published 'Transformation Through Depoliticization'[14] in 'FLASH ART International' followed by a performance at MoMa PS1 as part of 'back to school' curated by DIS in 2017. In 2010 De Vries collaborated with the american producer James Whipple to make the sound for the video: FORECAST.

  • Art critic Heinz-Norbert Jocks writes in KUNSTFORUM international: "Anne de Vries explores the boundaries of human action as well as the relationship between technology and mass experience"[15]

Boids

[edit]

In 2018 there is a solo exhibition from De Vries at the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden titled: 'Qrowd Qontrol'[16] with the Nematode-like sculptures which represent manipulated historical photographic material of which large religious or socio-politically motivated crowds. The title of this artwork is: "Boids" and refers to an algorithm for calculating mass behavior and 'artificial life programs[17]' where behavior can be simulated and studied.
