Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP-BC) is the designation for a neonatal nurse practitioner who has earned nursing board certification from the National Certification Corporation.

What is Neonatal Nursing?

It is a specialty in the nursing field that works with newborns who have a variety of problems from prematurity, birth defects, infection, cardiac malfunctions, and surgical problems. These patients are usually critically ill for months. Neonatal Nurse Practitioners take care of the infants from the times they are born until they are discharged from the hospital.

Where they work

Neonatal Nurse Practitioners usually work in maternity or pediatric hospitals. They take care of the infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit(NICU). There are three levels in which these doctors car work in: level 1, level 2, and level 3.

Level One: The Newborn Nursery- take care of healthy infants.

Level Two: Intermediate Care Nursing- take care of premature sick infants, which are in need of constant care.

Level Three: Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery- take care of the critically ill and premature infants in the NICU.
