January 26, 2007 Black Jews on PBS Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, the fine PBS show that airs locally on KERA-TV at the unholy hour of 6 a.m. on Saturdays, is planning a segment this week on African-American Jews.

Over the past several decades, the Jewish community within the U.S. has grown in numbers and diversity. Today, at least 20 percent of the Jewish population is comprised of people of color, including several thousand African- Americans Jews who believe their ancestors were originally Jewish and have converted from Christianity to Judaism in an effort to rediscover their heritage.

Menachem Daum talks with African-Americans about the reasons for their conversion to Judaism and the difficulties they face as they endeavor to raise to raise awareness of the racial and ethnic diversity of America's Jewish community.

The principal things concerning which this rule was made were marriage and inheritance. If one marries a woman upon the condition that she should become a proselyte, the marriage is null and void, because it is on condition of something which was not yet in existence. The same is the case as regards inheritance-one cannot say to a woman: "I will leave my estate to the children you may bear." In both these cases, usury cannot be the reason.
