Overview

Hratky.eu is a software platform developed at the MachWare, for creating location-based, scavenger-hunt and knowledge style games which use the GPS and web-connectivity features of a player's smartphone. The long term objective is to provide games connecting visits on places as museums, playgrounds, ZOOs with internet. The games ate to be fun and educatorial. Games are intended for single players and teams. Games can be tailored for target age, reflect physical evironment in which the game is placed.

Development & Features

Hratky.eu began development in 2015, as a support project for installation of playground in town Pec pod Snezkou. emerging from a collaborative project undertaken by a group of University of Alberta students from the Computer Science and Humanities Computing departments. fAR-Play is still under development, but a beta version is available for testing by request. fAR-Play’s development is managed by a team of interdisciplinary professors and students at the University of Alberta. Currently, the developing team’s roster includes Supervising Professors Geoffrey Rockwell and Eleni Stroulia, Developers Lucio Gutierrez and Matthew Delaney, and Website Developers Calen Henry and Garry Wong.[1]

Technology

fAR-Play relies on a number of open- and closed-source web technologies as tools to create, and enhance the users' experience. There is not required support tools on client mobile devices. Whole game takes place in devices browser. The server side Web application is implemented in PHP, using mySQL and Apache server.

How to Play

In order to participate in the locative aspects of Hratky.eu games, users must have an Android or iOS mobile device and access to wireless internet. Players usually start to participate in Hratky.eu anonymously, after completion players can create and sign into a Hratky.eu account. [2]

Playing on Browsers

The player can also play fAR-Play games within their mobile device’s browser. Each game has dedicated set of web pages on domain (or subdomain of) Hratky.eu. Subdomain are dedicated for families of games related together. By visiting [[1]] on a mobile device, players will be presented with a fully realized user interface, permitting full interaction with the games. Typicak scenario should be the player visits physical place, finds the task, artefact to capture, or question - navigate in browser into web page asociated with question / task/ artefact, capture the image of artefact using in-page HTML user interface and sends the image to the game system. Game system evaluates the image and reacts accordingly by transfering player to next stage or nofying him/her on failure at the taks. After all tasks are fulfilled the player is redirected to result page where he/she can register.


Game Types

Players complete an adventure when they have captured all of the nodes within it. fAR-Play provides two game modes: in a Virtual Scavenger Hunt, nodes must be captured in a specific order; in a Virtual Treasure Hunt, the order is unimportant. There are another variants available, creating virtual labyrinth in physical environment, combining basic game types with knowledge games where answers are provided using image recognition, etc.
