[edit]Granblue Fantasy Versus is fighting game developed by Arc System Works for the PlayStation 4 and it is based on the mobile role-playing video game titled Granblue Fantasy.[1][2] The fighting game was published by Cygames in Japan and released on Feburary 6, 2020, followed by a North American release on March 3, 2020, published by Xseed Games. Granblue Fantasy Versus was also announced to be ported for Microsoft Windows and was released on March 13, 2020.[3] Set in the Granblue Fantasy World, this particular fighting game served as an introductory gateway for Western audiences to experience the narrative and characters of its universe.[2] While sharing many of the same principles of other fighting games in the same genre, Granblue Fantasy Versus stood out from others in that priorities were made in development focusing on having a fighting game with a low-barrier of entry and high accessibility in mind.[1][2]
The features included within the fighting game consist of the traditional head-to-head "Versus Mode" where two players can pick from an array of characters and utilize the video game's unique battle system it offers.[1] With the goal of accessibility in mind, one of the major elements of the battle system is providing the players the ability to shortcut special moves quickly, which in turn can lower the amount of technical knowledge needed in order to get started.[1][2] Another major feature is the "RPG Mode", where players can take on quests in fighting waves of enemies and bosses, level up their characters, and search for new equipment through the incorporated gacha game mechanics.[2] This mode also includes a standalone narrative which introduces the main cast of characters from the Granblue Fantasy universe and their established relationships to one another.[1] The debut of Granblue Fantasy Versus during its first week in Japan, has topped Japanese sales charts in comparison to other modern fighting games.[3]
