Culturally relevant teaching

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

[edit]

Being involved in international teaching, there are often conversations about how a host country's culture can impact the school culture or curriculum. Equally, there are often conversations about whether an international school is paying enough attention to the local culture in the area where the school operates.

Culturally responsive teaching is also an area that has been continuing to receive focus, such as the work by The Leadership Academy, and this shows the importance of this topic in not just international education overall.

The article's lead section is reasonably concise, and the opening sentence provides a clear overview of what the article will be about. However, there needs to be a mention of what the major sections of the article will be. Outside of the opening two sentences, the second paragraph could have been included as a section within the article's main content as it details the definition and history of the concept being discussed.

The article provides a great deal of information relevant to culturally responsive teaching, which gives the reader. Different perspectives are provided throughout, and these are expanded on to give examples of how strategies and concepts would look when applied in the classroom setting. Much of the information is supported by recent research (up to 2019), but since 2019, more research and information could have been included to ensure the article remains current.

Across the article, the tone remains neutral mainly and focuses on presenting information the reader can interpret. When looking at the different principles and associated teaching practices, there is an equal amount of information about the various aspects of each, with a neutral tone throughout.

Across the article, there are several references, most of which come from peer-reviewed publications and scholarly work. There are some references cited from organizations, which could decrease the credibility of the article. Still, far more work is cited from journals and scholarly work compared to websites or educational organizations. These references are all primarily recent, mainly from the early 2000s to late 2010s. Given the period of the references, the work cited is extensive, presenting valuable insights into the topic across a wide range of authors. Some references are duplicated with conflicted dates, which could be checked and amended moving forward. There is also room to build on the article's content, including research and work published since 2019.

The language and structure of the article make the information easy to read, understand, and process. The edits made over the years have helped to eliminate spelling and grammatical errors that could have been present in an article that has been less heavily edited. The different sections of the article are clear and presented well, and the information is presented concisely.

Since the article was created in 2005, several users have edited and updated it. These edits continue to be made, which suggests the article is very active. However, many edits tend to focus on grammar and not always on addicting to or editing the article content. Within the article's talk page, there has been minimal conversation between the users who have been editing the page. The talk page shows that the article has been part of different Wiki Education Assignments, and it may highlight why the article has experienced active editing in recent years.

Looking at the whole article, more information could be added, especially if more current research could be added to the article. Additional work could also be done to identify or clarify the differences between different models or theories around culturally responsive teaching, as there appear to be various models or approaches cited across the article.
