"Kuse no Uta" (Japanese: くせのうた, lit.'Habit Song') is a song by Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Gen Hoshino from his debut studio album, Baka no Uta (2010).The song is the album's sole promotional single, released for exclusive airplay on the Japan FM League on October 20, 2015, and was also promoted with a listening video. Written and produced by Hoshino as the theme song to the morning news program Mezamashi Saturday [ja], it is a pop-like dance song that draws influence from black music genres, such as R&B and soul. Lyrically, Hoshino in falsetto encourages listeners to dance freely.

The song was received positively by album reviewers, who praised its sound as exciting. "Week End" peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for paid digital downloads. The song was particularly successful in airplay, ranking on Billboard Japan's year-end radio songs lists for both 2015 and 2016. It had its debut performance on the music program Music Station, after which Hoshino featured the song on the 2016 Yellow Voyage tour with dance performance from Elevenplay.

Background and composition

[edit]

Gen Hoshino first debuted as a member of the instrumental band Sakerock, which he formed in 2000 alongside classmates. When performing with Sakerock at music festival in 2007, Hoshino met Haruomi Hosono, a Japanese musician who significantly influenced the formation of the band. The two acquainted and began a two-way recurring column in the magazine TV Bros [ja]. Around the time Hoshino was to turn 30, he was approached by Hosono and his label Daisyworld, who asked Hoshino if he wished to release a solo lyrical studio album. While previously intimated by the idea of singing on his own record, he took the opportunity and began recording his debut album, Baka no Uta. It was released as an LP record by Sakerock's label Kakubarhythm on June 16, 2010, and as a CD album by Daisyworld's Labels United and Victor Entertainment's Speedstar Records on June 23, 2010.

"Kuse no Uta", the eight track, was released ahead of the album as a chaku-uta (ringtone) three days ahead of the album on June 11, 2010. While the album itself would not be available digitally until 2015, Victor sent "Kuse no Uta" to music download platforms such as iTunes on July 14, alongside the song "Kitchen". A music video for "Kuse no Uta" was uploaded to Victor Entertainment's YouTube alongside the song's ringtone release. It was directed by Ichirō Yamada, an art unit consisting of Hoshino, director Santa Yamagishi [ja], and designer Daijirō Ōhara [ja] that originally formed to work on Sakerock videos.
