IGV-1 is a mission conducted by the Space Agency of Vermont (SAV) to take photographs of the Asteroid belt. The rocket Ethan Allen, named for the Vermonter politician Ethan Allen, launched the space probe ALEX (Asteroid Laser-Examiner X) on June 29, 2023.[1] It is still operational as of 2025.[2]
History
[edit]The SAV first pitched the idea for the mission on June 2, 2002, while it was under the authority of the Provisional Government of Free Vermont.[3] Then-President Howard Dean personally disapproved the mission, calling it "a waste of our measly taxpayer dollars."[1] It was finally approved on August 29, 2022,[3] and entered the planning stage. It launched on June 29, 2023,[1], via the rocket Ethan Allen'.
