StoryBoard Artist is a computer application for creating and editing digital storyboards for non-graphic artists. It is used primarily in the film and TV industry by filmmakers, television producers, advertising creatives, game designers, DVD and interactive TV designers and educators to produce a visual layout of media projects for communicating with crews and/or clients during pre-production, before commencing the main production process. Artist is heavily related to its sister product, StoryBoard Quick, yet has more sophisticated features for consumers who are more experienced with digital media. StoryBoard Artist Studio is a more advanced release of Artist which was created to suit workgroups and provide specific features for such.

Use and Features
[edit]
StoryBoard Artist is used to plan spatial relationships between characters and props within their locations in shots and scenes using built-in 2D and 3D storyboard graphics (multi-angle rotatable characters, color-customizable props, location backgrounds) and/or imported digital art, such as Photoshop files, or photos (all of which can be stored in user-created libraries within the program). "The process starts with an empty frame. By using the libraries of characters, objects and environments you can build up a scene and, using director-camera arrows, you can get an idea how the final shot will look."[1] Artist provides the option to create non-linear storyboards for user-interactive projects, as well as the traditional shot sequences.
StoryBoard Artist also facilitates the planning process when starting from a script with features enabling the importing of formatted scripts (from screenplay applications like Final Draft, Movie Magic Screenwriter, Storyist, Montage and others) using import wizards. Artist has eighteen different caption areas into which different parts of the script can be imported or which can be used for communicating different specifications such as Action, Dialog, Sound, Lighting, and others.
StoryBoard Artist offers numerous pre-formatted professional storyboard layouts for printing as well as customizable print options: "Users can change the frame size, caption font size, and item locations on the page [... with] complete control over all elements on the page, from headers to footers, along with the ability to create customized storyboard scripts — one for the actors, one for the prop person, one for the costume person — each with side notes."[2] Artist also has the capability to export storyboards to QuickTime, Adobe Flash, [[Final Cut Pro and Avid.
The animatic feature is one more difference between StoryBoard Artist and StoryBoard Quick: "SB4's new pan/zoom functions, frame duration control, and between-frame transition tools allow users to create great, albeit rough, animation-like 'movies.'"[3]
Features of StoryBoard Artist Studio
[edit]StoryBoard Artist Studio was designed specifically for workgroups so it provides the additional feature of lock sequences, where sequences can be lifted and assembled from individual team members into the master version, as well as unlimited edits, in which different versions of the same project can be saved and compared to one another within the same file. Artist Studio also has one more export option than the regular Artist version: export to MetaSync, a format by Avid Technology. Artist Studio multiplies the animatic's track of sound to sixteen tracks, each with its own adjustable audio level. The individual sound levels partner with lockable and adjustable segments of sequences and thus sync the storyboard frames with dialog and sound. The Studio version introduced printing features such as a sketch mode which makes the storyboard frames look like sketched versions of the frames. Additionally, Artist Studio remains the only version of PowerProduction's line of storyboard software in which the printed storyboards can be customized by stacking frames, adding overlays, using arrows for communication, and otherwise creating indications outside the borders of the storyboards.
