Michel Born (born November 20, 1947) is a Belgian psychologist and criminologist, known for his pioneering research on self-reported delinquency and his development of the Delinquency spiral theory. He has been an Honorary Professor of Psychology at the University of Liège since 2012. His work in developmental psychology, juvenile delinquency, and psychosocial development has earned him significant recognition within academic and professional circles.
Early Years and Education
[edit]Born earned his master's degree in 1970 and a Ph.D. in psychology in 1983 in psychology at the University of Liège under the supervision of Professor Gaston Schaber and Spencer Millham. Early in his career, he worked as a clinical psychologist mainly at the State Secure Unit for Youths in Fraipont under the Ministry of Justice.
Career
[edit]Born's academic career progressed significantly when he joined the Luxembourg University Foundation in Arlon and had have been on post-graduate stays at Clark University and the Dartington Social Research Unit [1] Dartington Hall. After completing his Ph.D.he was appointed as a professor at the University of Liège in 1987, where he taught developmental psychology and adolescent psychology. In 1991, he became the director of the Department of Delinquency Psychology and Psychosocial Development, a position he held until being succeeded by Professor Fabienne Glowacz.
In addition to his academic roles, Born has been actively involved in international academic projects. He has supervised doctoral theses at various universities and served as a visiting professor in cities such as Curitiba (Brazil), Grenoble, Rennes, and Toulouse. Born was also a member of the NATO Science Committee's Life Science and Technology Panel from 1997 to 2001 and contributed to evaluation committees for criminology and psychology programs in Quebec.
Since 2001, Born has been a professor of Developmental Psychology at the University of the Aosta Valley in Italy.

Research
[edit]Born is renowned for his research on adolescence, juvenile delinquency, and the psychosocial factors influencing deviant behavior. His Delinquency spiral theory explains how minor delinquent behaviors can escalate into more serious offenses over time. His quantitative and qualitative research has been influential in shaping methods for studying self-reported delinquency, with Born being one of the early proponents of using self-reported delinquency questionnaires in European research.
In collaboration with his research team, Born developed the EVA-GOA test [4], which assesses the autonomy of young people. This tool has been widely used by institutions in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to evaluate minors in difficulty. Born has also contributed to research on the political participation of youth, including his involvement in the European Project on Processes Influencing Democratic Ownership and Participation (PIDOP)[5], which he helped disseminate in French-speaking countries.
His influential books include Jeunes déviants ou délinquants juvéniles, Psychologie de la délinquance[1], and Comment intervenir efficacement près des jeunes délinquants[2], all of which are highly regarded in the academic and criminology communities. His work continues to influence policies and practices concerning juvenile delinquency and intervention strategies.
Professional Affiliations
[edit]Born has held several leadership positions throughout his career. He was President of the School of Criminology at the University of Liège from 1995 to 2003 and served as Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Liège from 2004 to 2008. He has been involved in various professional associations, including serving as President of the Association of French-speaking Criminologists (AICLF) from 2002 to 2004 and as President of the European Association for Research on Adolescence (EARA) from 2010 to 2012.
