The free-to-play battle royale-hero shooter game Apex Legends, developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, features a diverse cast of playable characters known as Legends. Apex Legends is set in the same science fiction universe as Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall series, with several characters from the Titanfall series appearing either as minor characters or playable Legends.
The game launched with 8 characters, with at least 16 more added in each subsequent new season post-release. A match starts with each player selecting from one of the available hero characters for a bloodsport competition operated in The Outlands known as the Apex Games. The games involve combatants entering an arena on the island and battling each other in squads of three. The victors among the contestants of the Games or "Legends" are known as as "Apex Champions".
The game's characters are divided into five role classifications: Assault, Skimisher, Recon, Support and Controller. Each character comes with a passive ability, a tactical ability and an ultimate ability. Season 16 implemented a new system that emphasizes new class-specific perks to add a new layer of strategy to this shooter, with each of the five classes having a unique perk attributed to it.
Assault
[edit]Ash
[edit]Ash was originally Dr. Ashleigh Reid, a scientist who worked on working on Project Iris alongside her mentor Horizon to research the existence of a material called Branthium, a special material that can only be found in black holes. On a mission to secure Branthium, Ashleigh betrayed Horizon and the rest of her group before being mortally wounded by Amelie Paquettes. She is reconstituted as a simulacrum, a robotic construct, prior to her death.
Ash's playstyle favours aggression. Her special abilities include the ability to scan death boxes to mark the locations of any surviving party members, throw a snare that tethers and damages enemies which are in close proximity, and create a one-way portal in the direction player is facing.
Ballistic
[edit]Ballistic is the call sign of August Montgomery Brinkman, a billionaire orphan who decided to use the financial resources he had access to early in life to dominate the battlefield. August retired from the games after a series of unfortunate events and retreated into solitude. He has since returned to offer his own services to the Apex Games in place of his son Nathaniel
Ballistic has the passive ability to store a third weapon in the sling, which is accessible via inventory or Character Utility Action. He can shoot a projectile that causes an enemy’s projectile to overheat as they shoot. He can also support nearby teammates by granting them faster reload and movement speed, as well as infinite ammunition.
Bangalore
[edit]Bangalore is the callsign of Anita Williams, who was separated from her family during a military mission and wants to make some money in the Apex Games in order to be reunited with them.
Bangalore's passive ability sees her moving at an increased pace for a brief amount of time when taking fire from enemies. She could to hurl a smoke grenade that explodes on impact at her enemies, and she can send an artillery strike across the landscape as her ultimate ability.
Bloodhound
[edit]An enigmatic technological tracker and expert huntsman that utilizes high-tech gadgetry to pursue his enemies on the battlefield.
Bloodhound see footprints left behind by other players as a passive ability. The Eye of the Allfather, which invokes elements of Norse mythology. His Tactical ability reveals hidden enemies, trips and other secrets, and his Ultimate ability and enables him to move faster and highlight opponents for the player's benefit.
Catalyst
[edit]Catalyst is the alias of Tressa Crystal Smith, who hails from the planet Boreas, where the residents learn early to manage resources efficiently. She is the first transwoman character introduced in Apex Legends.
Catalyst has the ability to manipulate a substance called ferrofluid and apply it in combat situations. She can use ferrofluid to barricade doors, throw out a patch which turns into spikes, and raise a permeable wall of ferrofluid to hinder her enemies as her Ultimate ability.
Caustic
[edit]Caustic is the alias of a scientist named Alexander Nox who worked for a leading pesticide gases manufacturer. He tested an experimental formula on himself, which changed him irrevocably on a biological level.
Caustic's abilities revolves around poison and gas attacks. His passive ability allows him to see through his gas attacks. He can produce a gas-filled canister trap that will detonate when shot or triggered by enemies, or send a large puff of toxic smoke across a vast area for his Ultimate ability.
Crypto
[edit]Crypto is the alias of Tae Joon Park, a hacker and encryption expert who was framed for a murder.
Crypto deploys a series of aerial surveillance drones to aid him in battle. His passive ability allows him to mark all enemies within 30 meters of the team via his drone. He can deploy his drones to scan the surrounding area for hostile teams, or detonate his drone to generate an EMP blast that deals shield damage, staggers enemies, and disables traps.
Fuse
[edit]Walter Fitzroy, or Fuse, is a mercenary from Salvo, a planet known for its expertise in ballistics and explosives.
Fuse's Passive Ability renders him the only character in the game that can stack ordinance, firing grenades faster, further, and more accurately compared to other characters. Fuse can launch cluster bombs that deals damage on impact before turning into several smaller explosives, while his Ultimate Ability launches a mortar that explodes mid-air before falling and encircling the intended target in a wall of flame.
Gibraltar
[edit]Makoa Gibraltar is a large built whose strong defensive abilities is intended to fulfill the classic "tank" role in a team. He is noted an openly gay man whose origin story involve a sense of responsibility and protection to atone for his mistakes and the losses suffered by his father and boyfriend.
Gibraltar can deploy a gun shield that blocks incoming fire. He can deploy a dome-shaped shield as a tactical ability, who offers protection to the rest of the team for 15 seconds. His Ultimate Ability, Defensive Bombardment, consists of a concentrated mortar strike on a marked position.
Horizon
[edit]Dr. Mary Somers, also known as Horizon, is an astrophysicist and gravitational expert originally from the planet Olympus. She survived being stranded near a black hole for 87 years as a result of Ash's treachery, and is intent on searching for the whereabouts of her son that she left behind.
Her Passive and Tactical abilities involve adjustments to her custom spacesuit for navigation purposes and the manipulation of gravity respectively. For Horizon's Ultimate ability, her robot assistant NEWT is capable of generating a micro black hole that pulls other character in towards it before they get hit with a gravitation blast at the end.
Lifeline
[edit]Ajay Che, or Lifeline, is a healer who renounced her association to her family, who made their wealth profiting from war, and dedicates herself exclusively to good causes.
Most of Ajay's abilities are administered by her companion drones. Her D.O.C. drone revives downed party members as part of her Passive Ability. Another called the Drone of Compassion, which automatically heals nearby teammates over a brief period, can be deployed as her Tactical Ability. Lifeline’s Ultimate Ability summons a drop pod that provides high-quality defensive gear.
Loba
[edit]Loba Andrade is a master thief with teleportation abilities. She grew up an orphan after her family was killed by Revenant, which forced her to survive by picking pockets and cultivating her instincts.
Loba is capable of spotting nearby epic and legendary loot through walls. She could throw her Jump Drive Bracelet and teleport to hard-to-reach places or escape from her foes. Place a portable device that allows you to teleport nearby loot into your inventory.
