Gunsparky is an Australian website used by electrical apprentices to improve their knowledge of electrotechnology.
The word gunsparky is made up of two words that are both Australian colloquialisms. "gun" meaning very good [1]or someone who is very good at something, and "sparky" meaning electrician
The site is based on a moodle platform and was originally made up of sample exam questions with immediate feedback. It has continued to evolve with the feedback for most questions being tailored to suit the students answer to the question. The feedback may be as basic as telling the student that they are an idiot, or as complicated as a detailed instruction on how to answer the question. The site is not affiliated with any official training organisation or government agency. It uses humour and sometimes vulgar language to engage the target audience.
The philosophy behind the site is that answering questions is an effective learning tool. This idea is loosely based on the concept of Programmed learning.
gunsparky.training is contunuously modified to improve student learning by manually looking over stuent reponses to questions in an effort to understand what needs further instruction. More difficult questions walk a student through a difficult concept using Instructional scaffolding.
