User:Gregbard/Free speech issues

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and as such, its article content is not proper subject matter for unregulated freedom of speech. This fact is well known and accepted by the community. However, there is no notion that the same standard of regulation should extend to the talk namespaces in which editors bring content issues to the attention of the greater community. There is no rational reason for limitations on:

  • Wikipedia:Canvassing
  • Creation of email lists of like-minded, or similarly interested Wikipedians
  • Self-defense in discussions about proposed sanctions

Wikipedians have not only the right, but the duty to challenge any infringement on their ability to communicate in the talk namespace, with responsibility for the abuse of those privileges.
