Jonathan Yates is a professional golfer from Ireland who currently competes on the European Hotelplanner Tour.
Early life and education
[edit]Yates was born in Ireland and is associated with Naas Golf Club.[1] He continued to focus on golf during his university years while studying at University College Dublin (UCD).[2]
Career
[edit]Amateur career
[edit]Yates gained early recognition as part of the Maynooth University team that secured the Barton Shield All-Ireland title.[3] Among his teammates was future DP World Tour player Gary Hurley. In 2015, Yates won the Midland's Scratch Cup, a notable 72-hole amateur event previously won by players such as Joe Carr and Pádraig Harrington. He equaled the course record with a final-round 66 en route to victory.[4]
His first national individual title came at the Irish Colleges Strokeplay Championship, held at Strandhill.[5][6]
Yates claimed the West of Ireland Championship in 2016, following in the footsteps of his clubmate Jack Hume, who had won it two years earlier. He defeated Daniel Holland in the final to secure the title.[7][8][9]
Yates represented Leinster in the interprovincial championships in 2016,[10] 2017, and 2018.[11] He made his senior debut for Ireland at the 2018 European Nations Cup in Sotogrande,[12][13] and later took part in the European Amateur Team Championship and the Home Internationals that same year.
Professional career
[edit]Yates turned professional in 2019 after completing his amateur career.[14] He initially played on the Alps Tour, where he consistently placed well. In 2022, he recorded a top-10 finish during the Alps Tour season,[15] which enabled him to advance to the Hotelplanner Tour—a development tour that leads toward qualification for the European (DP World) Tour.[16]
Professional wins
[edit]Domestically, Yates has recorded several wins in Ireland.[17] His most notable international victory came in the 2022 Emilia Romagna Alps Tour Grand Final, where he finished two strokes ahead of Stefano Mazzoli.[18][19][20]
