Animal shelter

United States[edit]

Currently it is estimated that there are approximately 5,000 independently run animal shelters operating nationwide.[7]. Shelters have redefined their role since the 1990s. Animal shelters around the United States euthanize around 1.5 million cats and dogs every year[1]. [g1] No longer serving as an until-death repository for strays and drop-offs, modern shelters have taken the lead in controlling the pet population, promoting pet adoption, and studying shelter animals' health and behavior. In order to prevent animals being euthanized, some shelters offer behavioral assessments of animals and training classes to make them more adoptable to the public. Most shelters also provide medical care that includes spaying and neutering, which will prevent overpopulation.

Animal shelter

An animal shelter or pound is a place where stray, lost, abandoned or surrendered animals, mostly dogs and cats, and sometimes sick or wounded wildlife are kept and rehabilitated. While no-kill shelters exist, it is sometimes policy to euthanize sick animals, and any animal that is not claimed quickly enough by a previous or new owner. The only reason “no-kill” shelters can keep being called "no-kill" is because they turn away animals that will either not get adopted or get euthanized.[2] [g1] In Europe, of 30 countries included in a survey, all but four (Czech republic,[1] Germany, Greece, and Italy) permitted the killing of healthy stray dogs.[2] Critics believe the new term "animal shelter" is generally a euphemism for the older term "pound". The word "pound" had its origins in the animal pounds of agricultural communities, where stray livestock would be penned or impounded until claimed by their owners. Some shelters even have sick tropical animals

Animal shelter

Costa Rica[edit]

There is a place in Heredia Province, Alajuela, Costa Rica called Territorio de Zaguates which translate into “Land of the Mutts.” There is over hundreds of dogs on this land that Lya Battles and volunteers come and take care of them and give them love that they have never had.[3] [g1] Land of the Strays, 152-hectare sanctuary in the centre of the Central American country is funded by donations. Around 8,000 dogs have passed through the refuge.

Animal sanctuary

Animal sanctuary

An animal sanctuary is a facility where animals are brought to live and be protected for the rest of their lives.[1] Unlike animal shelters, sanctuaries do not seek to place animals with individuals or groups, instead maintaining each animal until its natural death. However, they can offer rehoming services. In some cases, an establishment may have characteristics of both a sanctuary and a shelter; for instance, some animals may be in residence temporarily until a good home is found and others may be permanent residents. Owning a sanctuary, takes a lot of time, love, money, and patience that are needed for the animals.[4] [g1] The mission of sanctuaries is generally to be safe havens, where the animals receive the best care that the sanctuaries can provide. Animals are not bought, sold, or traded, nor are they used for animal testing. The resident animals are given the opportunity to behave as natural as possible in a protective environment.[1]
