Heavenly Tyrant is a 2024 young adult science fantasy novel by Chinese-Canadian writer Xiran Jay Zhao. It serves as the sequel to her previous novel Iron Widow. The plot follows a fictionalized version of first and only Chinese empress Wu Zetian after the events of the first book, where she faces new challenges governing Huaxia, a fictionalized version of Medieval China. [1]
Heavenly Tyrant is a New York Times bestseller.[2]
Background and development
[edit]A sequel to Iron Widow was announced in 2022 with an initial Spring 2023 release date.[3] However, the book was delayed multiple times, first to April 30, 2024 due to payment issues from her publisher[4] and again to December 24 because of, according to Zhao, her pro-Palestinian activism during the Israel–Hamas war.[5]
Zhao is a self-described "enthusiastic studier of revolutions" and wanted to focus her novel on the aftermath of the revolution in her first book. She also decided to include fictionalized versions of other Chinese historical figures such as Princess Taiping, Shangguan Wan'er, and Di Renjie.[1]
