Early life and education

[edit]

Thelma Anna Carmela Cibelli was born on 17 July 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland to Gaetano and Assunta Cibelli, Italian migrants to Scotland. Thelma was named after Thelma Ritter, an actress whose films her mother enjoyed; she was the only one of her siblings to not be given an Italian first name. Her father Gaetano owned a hairdressing salon and Thelma described him as a controlling and violent figure in her autobiography.[1]

She was educated at the Convent of Mercy and excelled in learning French and Latin. In 1940, she began an arts degree at the University of Glasgow but this was interrupted when she ran away from home before joining the Auxiliary Territorial Service later that year. She worked as a driver throughout the war and was demobilised with an "exemplary" service record, even though she was once absent without leave after stowing away to France in order to win a bet. She met her future husband Alex Hunter at a dance after they were demobilised.[1]

Returning to university, Thelma chose to instead study political economy.
