Tourism in Cornwall
[edit]In 2023, Cornwall had more short-term let guest stays than any other local authority in the UK, with 1,586,060 guest night stays according to the Office for National Statistics.[1] This was over 400,000 more than the second placed local authority, the City of Edinburgh, and almost double the third placed Westminster.[1] Cornwall alone made up 7.3% of England's total guest nights, the highest share for a single local authority.[1]
Education in Cornwall
[edit]Jennifer Blunden, CEO of the Truro and Penwith Academy Trust, warned in 2024 that Pendeen School faced closure after its pupil numbers fell to 79.[2] The school's capacity is 119 pupils.[2] Blunden said that the fall in pupils was linked to second homes and holiday lets in the area.[2] Brian Clemens, the Cornwall Council member for Land's End, said that the national government should reform its funding formula, which he characterised as "one of the biggest obstacles for rural communities.[2]
Truro
[edit]A 2024 study by Britsuperstore found that Truro had the highest number of empty shops per person in the UK, with 90.6 empty shops per 100,000 people.[3] The national average was found to be 13 empty shops per 100,000 people.[3]
