Diplomatics is a type of study that focuses on documents – usually historical documents. It focuses on the writing style that has been used by various document creators, and uses this to increase understanding of the steps for making a document, as well as the relationship between the message of the document and the reality of the world during its creation.

Diplomatics first checked royal and church documents to see if they were created by a trustworthy group. However, many of the same strategies could be used for other kinds of documents, including electronic ones.
