[edit]Formation (1927–1936)
[edit]During the early 20th century, the Ronalds Shield, a prestigious club football tournament held in both Dhaka and Chittagong, was largely dominated by Hindu-majority clubs from Dhaka, particularly Victoria SC and Wari Club. To promote football among Muslim youth, Muslim Sporting Club was established on 7 May 1927, following a joint meeting of sports enthusiasts and hockey players from the Khwaja family at Dilkusha Garden. Notable attendees included Khwaja Adel, Khwaja Ismail, Khwaja Azad, Khwaja Atiqullah, and Khwaja Soleman, along with other powerful political figures. Following the meeting, Khwaja Ismail and Khwaja Adel were elected as the club’s president and secretary, respectively. Meanwhile, Kazi Awal Hossain of 25 Maneswar Road, Hazaribagh, Dhaka, was entrusted with the responsibility of forming the club’s football team. He actively scouted talent from schools, colleges, madrasas, and universities across Dhaka, eventually assembling a team in Hazaribagh.
In the same year, the club participated in the Ronalds Shield held in Dhaka. The squad included Abdul Hakim Khan, Abdus Salam, Naseem Ahmed Khandoker, Kazi Awal Hossain, Romizuddin Ahmed, Sirajul Haque Bhuiya, and Amzad Hossain. Kazi Awal Hossain, who was entrusted with organizing the team, also served as its captain. However, following their participation in the tournament, which was eventually won by Victoria SC, the club's activities became irregular.
Eventually, when Kolkata Mohammedan won the Calcutta First Division League title in 1934, it created a stir among Muslims across British India. Inspired by this achievement, members of the Nawab family of Dhaka became proactive in establishing a wing of Kolkata Mohammedan in Dhaka. After spending a few years raising funds and acquiring the necessary equipment, Muslim Sporting Club was renamed Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1936, with Khwaja Ajmal of the Nawab family, who was also a first-class football referee, serving as the president.
Administrative reforms (1937–1955)
[edit]In 1937, the club captained by Abul Hasnat, a member of the new committee and a renowned sports administrator, won the Second Division of Dhaka. Notably, Hasnat was the president of the Kabaddi Federation and joint secretary of the Dhaka District Sports Association. In 1938, Mohammedan entered the First Division, and aside from Hasnat, their first top-tier squad included the likes of Sheikh Shaheb Ali, Yahya, Obaidul Haque, Khwaja Zaheer, Abul Hafiz, and S.A. Jamman, to name a few.
