Article Evaluation & Ideas: Female Hysteria

[edit]

I think I would like to add more to the history portion and include a section about the impact this diagnosis had on women. I want to find research that describes some of the outcomes and issues that arose with this diagnosis and look further into how it was identified, some possible "symptoms", and treatment. I think it would be beneficial to find a way to address some of the controversy and issues with this outdated diagnosis and provide the public with a balanced criticism of this topic.

I think you have some good ideas here. The article is definitely lacking in sources, and there's a lot of improvement that could be made to already existing sections. It might be worthwhile to expand upon the history section, which does not give a large amount of information about cultural attitudes, development of treatment and diagnosis, etc. I think it would worth while to create a separate section for symptoms and treatment, and expand accordingly. It would be really interesting to see a discussion of the underlying factors which led to the conceptualization of hysteria as being, if not exclusively, then largely belonging to women. If you wanted to, I imagine there would also be the possibility of modern portrayals of hysteria, as well as modern attitudes. Bwoollard (talk) 00:18, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

It seems like you have a good start for what you are wanting to add to the page. The page is so short and limited in offered information that I think anything you add is going to improve the article nicely, assuming the information is well sourced. I definitely agree that the history section is a good place to start with expansion. One thing I believe could be interesting to add is a section on the literature surrounding this topic. There is a short story called The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman that specifically comes to mind is it addresses female hysteria from the perspective of the woman and is really impactful. If you want more literature I'm a total book worm and would be happy to offer more ideas. Great topic choice! Good luck! TrinityLeonis (talk) 06:37, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Peer Review Response

[edit]

Hello! I appreciate both of you responding to my article and offering me some input. I have been struggling with finding appropriate sources so your suggestions about other places in the article I could try to look at are very helpful. I think I will follow some ideas from both of your reviews as I continue trying to find good material to add to this page. I think I will specifically pursue finding more information about symptoms and treatments along with the cultural implications and other literature. Both of your ideas have helped give me a little more inspiration in what to look for and I think can better guide where I focus some of my time and sources into. Thank you for your input and see you in class!
