Thunder Over Michigan is a annual air show hosted at Willow Run Airport every summer. It was started in 1999 by the Yankee Air museum as a airshow and fundraiser, and has grown to be one of the biggest air shows in Michigan.[1][2] Demonstrations can get as low as 50 feet (15 meters) or as high as 30 thousand feet (9144 meters) in the case of the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team.[3]
In 2020, the airshow had its first cancellation due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[4] In 2023, due to a MIG-23 crashing during performance, the airshow was canceled.[5]
About
[edit]The airshow primarily showcases military aviation with demonstrations from the Blue Angels[1] and the Thunderbirds[3], as well as demonstrations from current and retired US Air Force, Army, and Navy aircraft, such as the F-35 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor, F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-14 Tomcat, A-10 Thunderbolt II, TBF Avenger, C-130, KC-135, and a MiG-23 Flogger. Helicopters that have flown at Thunder Over Michigan include the UH-60 Blackhawk, SH-60 Seahawk, AH-1 Cobra, UH-1H Huey, AH-64 Apache, and a MH-65E Dolphin.
