Rubiks Cubes
Algorithm (cubing)
[edit]In cubing, algorithms are a set of moves done to reach a desired state of a puzzle. When performed, algorithms uniquely permute a collection of pieces, which are identified in a certain set of patterns around the cube called a case. Algorithms are typically learned or organized in algorithm sets, a collection of cases meant to transition between one step of a method to another step.
Algorithms, especially those considered "optimal" for a specific case or permutation, are rarely found with intuition. Though a given case's algorithm cannot be found by observing the permutations and solving , Rubik's cube solvers will instead find algorithms by trial and error, by using a collection of commutators, or with computer programs.
Algorithm sets are used in the speedsolving methods of most cubes. For 3x3 puzzles, the most popular methods of speedsolving have several sets of algorithms, including layer building methods such as CFOP and ZZ, as well as block-building methods such as Roux, Petrus, and Mehta. Some solvers use a variety algorithms sets to increase their speed preparing them for faster subsequent cases or steps, or by reducing the overall number of steps in a method (though this can come at the cost of case recognition time in larger algorithm sets, such as ZBLL, OLLCP, or 1LLL). Solvers also use algorithms to sharpen their understanding of intuitive steps, such as F2L.
