How to deal with image backlogs

[edit]
  1. Check the image to make sure the offending condition still exists; that is, the image still has no source given, no rationale given, is still orphaned, etc.
  2. Delink the image from all the pages in which it appears. You can do this pretty efficiently with some tabbed browsing or, in the case of an image which is used on a larger scale, an editing tool such as AWB. You should use a descriptive edit summary such as non-free media with no fair-use rationale for over 7 days. AzaToth's Twinkle script will automatically remove images from articles when the 'csd' function is used to delete the image.
  3. Once the image is orphaned, it's safe to delete it. Again, use a descriptive deletion summary as above.

You can find "simple" problem images at CAT:NR, CAT:NS, CAT:NL, and some other places. As of the writing of this page, the first of these are each backlogged by an unfathomable lot.

Another backlog is at CAT:DFUI, but some of these disputes may require a further understanding of our fair-use policies and processes.
