Sconex and social networking service for high school students which was started in late 2004. Sconex accounts can be created by invitation from existing members or by using any valid e-mail address. Users are able to post their class schedules, make photo albums, keep an online journal in their "Notebook", leave messages at their friends' blackboards (which are like little messageboxes), join sconex-based groups, and enter lists of their favorite celebrities, films, books, songs, TV shows and videogames.

As of January 3, 2006, Alexa ranks Sconex as the 6,958th most popular site on the web [1].

According to Sconex's copyright policy, all content posted on Sconex becomes the property of Sconex.

Costs

Sconex is supported by both graphical ads and Google's AdSense. However, unlike many other services, they do not have an option for a paid account with more features.

Social Networking

Friends can locate eachother through a search feature that searches by name, year, gender and school. A typical user could also view classmates registered in the same classes as them. Despite Sconex's intended purpose, to network friends, "friends" on Sconex are sometimes not actually friends of a user. This is a common trend that has caused some users who have hundreds, even thousands and possibly in the ten-thousands of "friends" listed.

Privacy

A user specifies the ammount of security on parts of his account. This involves who is allowed to view certain information they post. This can be configured to allow or disallow four groups of users. These are "Friends", Classmates, "Friends' Friends" and "Friends'" Classmates. The default settings are usually balanced. For example, one's contact information, if posted, such as a user's telephone number, can only be seen by that person's "friends." In contrast, one's list of "friends" can be viewed by anybody who fits any of those four groups. Anybody who does not fit any of the four categories can not view any of the user's information.

Famous uses

Sconex has also been used to spark a relatively major movement and a relatively minor event. The major event was the organization of a strike at DeWitt Clinton High School on September 20, 2005 [2]. The minor event was the "No School December 7" movement which had the potential to cause up to aproximately 50,000 students to cut the school day on December 7, 2005. However, the movement was not as sucsessful as projected. After December 7th, the movement was re-assigned by the owner to January 20, 2006.
