Roger Erwin Puta (1944–1990) was an American photographer, known for his comprehensive collection of railroad photographs. Puta served in the United States Navy and worked for multiple railroads, photographing railroad-related topics during his travels for work. Puta's photographs have been dedicated to the public domain by his heirs, serving as a valuable resource for researchers of 20th-century American railroad history.

Biography

Roger Erwin Puta was born in 1944 in Berwyn, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and completed a master's degree in transportation at Northwestern University. The topic of his master's thesis was the public image of American railroads.[3]

Puta's photographs were inherited by his friends Mel Finzer and Marty Bernard, who have released them into the public domain.[4]
