Cryptokitties are a line of digital tokens (a.k.a. ERC20's) created by an anonymous person using the Ethereum protocol. The cryptokitties are unique because each kittie cannot be counterfiet unlike traditional digital items, giving them a collectible feel. During the later half of 2017, the kitties emerged as a major fad, and were collected not only as toys but also as a financial investment due to the high resale value of some kitties.
