“Flags on the 48” is an annual memorial event in commemoration of the September 11 attacks of 2001.
History
[edit]On September 15, 2001, a group of six hikers climbed up Mt Liberty in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with rope, a US Flag, and lengths of PVC tubing to use as a flagpole. They flew the flag from the summit as a memorial to the events and victims of 9/11. This grassroots effort soon turned into an annual event, growing to encompass all 48 of the Four-thousand footers[1]
Schedule
[edit]The event takes place on the 11th if it is a Sunday, or on the closest Saturday. The flag is flown from noon until 2pm.
