Would you think that I'm here just to build an encyclopedia? I'm actually getting experience to become an administrator. Maybe even a bureaucrat. Or even an interface administrator? This page will show how.
Who are administrators?
[edit]Administrators (also knows as admins, or more internally, sysops (System operators)) are Wikipedians, who have a lot of experience of editing Wikipedia, including editing, moving, discussions, understand policies and guidelines very well. They can perform certain actions, like blocking, banning, protecting, deleting, and even bypassing the title blacklist. These users are located in the sysop
group. While this sound exciting, it's more like cleaning up the encyclopedia, than feeling like a king. See Wikipedia:Don't edit for power. The next section will show how I get adminship.
From newcomer to adminship
[edit]First, I created an account primarily to edit. Next, I became autoconfirmed. In May, I started working as a recent changes patrol, which is a fun and quick way to become extended confirmed. After I become extended confirmed, I might request the following rights to continue moderating Wikipedia content:
After, like, a year or so, I might continue requesting rights, to continue my way to adminship. These include:
In total, these are my requirements to request adminship for myself:
- At least 5,000 edits, including in at least 1 area, where I'll be ready to use administrative tools
- At least 2-3 years of edit history
- A few rights (like template editor, rollbacker, or autopatrolled)
Sure, there will be a few fails (they'll keep saying "Not now, not today, come back later, not done, not ready, etc.").[sarcasm] Once I get granted adminship, I will start testing my administrators' tools at Wikipedia: Administrators' guide. When I'll master them, I'll start working then.
What's next?
[edit]After experiencing myself as an admininstrator, I might get rights for bureaucrat, interface administrator, CheckUser, oversight, and finally, stewards! It might take a few more years or a decade, or even longer, but the result is worth it. But I'll be active and not misuse the tools, I really don't want to get desysopped. Desysopping is the revoking of adminship, and that's frustrating.
