"Me & U" is a song by American singer Cassie from her self-titled debut studio album.

Background

[edit]

"Me & U" was a demo Cassie and producer Ryan Leslie recorded in April 2005.[1] Leslie wrote, produced and recorded it with keyboards and a Mac in the living room of his apartment in Harlem, New York.[2][3] He used Avid Audio's digital audio workstation Pro Tools to produce the song, using only its DigiRack audio plug-ins: a standard 4-band equalization, regular compressor, and medium delay or reverb. The synth line was made on a Korg Triton.[4]

Release and promotion

[edit]

To break Cassie through as an artist, Leslie used intense online marketing, specifically on Myspace.[3] In November 2005, Cassie shared daily video blogs and a four-song demo including "Me & U" on the platform. Within three weeks, 60,000 users made "Me & U" their Myspace background music, and it later became a viral phenomenon, surpassing 2 million listeners.[2][3][5] "People were able to put my face and name to the song, and they loved it," Cassie recalled.[5]

The site took off - to the point where deejays started playing the song from the demo alone. Eventually, that inspired the usual bidding war among labels. Diddy's Bad Boy won out. https://www.proquest.com/docview/306050142/CCC44137361E44C4PQ/45?accountid=196403&sourcetype=Newspapers

Growth can be attributed to word-of-mouth. "The song grew pretty organically," Ventura says. "Radio stations added it before I even got signed, and clubs were playing it three and four times a night," she says. "It was already established by the time labels started noticing me."<Billboard>

It soon became a club hit in the USA, and a promotional tour with Leslie in Germany created an overseas audience. https://www.proquest.com/docview/409020140/A4924041A24F6DPQ/13?accountid=196403&sourcetype=Newspapers

Leslie worked their first pairing, "Me & U," to New York club DJs, securing a local hit before the song broke nationally. https://www.proquest.com/docview/227238150/CCC44137361E44C4PQ/27?accountid=196403&sourcetype=Trade%20Journals

Combs heard "Me & U" while partying at New York's Bungalow 8 and shortly after made Leslie an offer he couldn't refuse: a joint artist deal for Cassie and a distribution deal for Leslie's label/production/media/marketing company, NextSelection Lifestyle Group. https://www.proquest.com/docview/405103520/CCC44137361E44C4PQ/32?accountid=196403&sourcetype=Newspapers
