Ponni M Concessao

Ponni M Concessao is a famous Indian Women Architect who is well-known for her exceptional works across India and in other countries.

Early Life

Ponni M Concessao was born in the year 1963 to Mr Mukundan and Mrs Rugmani Mukundan. She has a younger brother and younger sister. She possessed an incredible talent in the field of art right from her childhood days. Besides, she decided to be an Architect during her early high-school days. She had a flair for art and technicalities right from those days. Her father is a civil engineer and so Ponni used to visit different sites during her school days. They were the catalyst for her interest towards civil engineering and architecture. She had a great exposure in building construction and designs.

She is naturally competitive, hardworking and determined, and her mother made sure to provide the best education for her daughter. She loves to call herself the nation builder. She was the first woman to get admitted to Bachelor of Architecutre in National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli. Her father encouraged her studies and he is also the strong believer of the term of ‘economically independent women’. She married her senior from NIT Trichy. Her husband is Mr. Oscar Concessao is also a well-known Architect. Ponni made sure to be financially independent and to come back to India from US after her higher studies.

Her great grandfather has won Rao Bahadur award. It was an honour provided to select Indians during the British rule for their hardworking and faithful service. Not forget to mention, Ponni’s great grandfather pursued MBBS at Edinboro University in the UK.

* Diploma Designing in Stone, Verona, Italy, October 2010.

Works

She is always being in a male-dominated field; She also points out India as one of the finest countries to promote ambitious women. She firmly believes that her hard work and courage brought her handful of major projects around the globe.

She is currently building the 12 lakhs sq.ft Secretariat at Hyderabad for Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Besides, she is also designing the new space center for ISRO called ‘Gaganyaan Space Center’. Further, she is also leading the PMYA (Prime Minister A was Yojana) project whose motto is ‘Housing for All’. She states Prime Minister Narendra Modi contributes greatly in building India’s heritage. She also worked with former Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi for over 15 years. It was Ponni and her husband who designed the former Tamilnadu CM M. Karunanidhi’s CIT Colony home. Ponni also designed Kalaignar’s Karuvoolam, Perasiriyar Noolagam, his Memorial Museum at Tiruvarur and many more iconic buildings.

Apart from this, she has an intense interest in Tamil literature. She regards Tamil culture as highly-inclusive. She closely works with Padma Venkatraman, wife of former President Venkatraman. Padma is an iconic person who runs a leprosy eradication center named ‘Rising Star Outreach of India’. Ponni is a governing board person and she has also built huge schools exclusively dedicated for children whose parents are affected with leprosy. She is also the executive member of ‘The Spastic Society of India’. The architect also built several toilet buildings for government schools.

Ponni states her father as her huge inspiration. Further, she also looks up to Dr. Indira Dutt, Chairperson of KCP groups. Another famous and finest french economist; Christine Lagarde is yet another huge inspiration for Ponni. She also looks up to former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his hardworking and humble nature. The nation builder also points out former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and noble prize winner Mother Theresa as her huge role models.
