Stefan Levin (born 12 August 1964 in Värnamo, Sweden) is a Swedish composer, music producer, and guitarist. His work spans theatre, contemporary dance, film, and experimental guitar music.

Biography

Levin studied classical guitar at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg and composition at the Malmö Academy of Music. He also pursued further studies in Germany and Italy, and studied privately with Swedish composer Sven-Eric Johanson between 1986 and 1988.

Career

Theatre and Early Works

In the 1990s, Levin composed chamber music and wrote music for 16 theatrical productions, including for Stockholm City Theatre, Gothenburg City Theatre, Helsingborg City Theatre, and Dalateatern.

Contemporary Dance

Since the early 2000s, Levin has primarily composed music for contemporary dance. He created scores for three ballets for Cullberg Ballet: *As if*, *Negro con Flores*, and *Blanco*. He also collaborated extensively with the dance company Stockholm 59° North, producing works such as *Cantus in Memory of the Dancing Queen*, *Kom ni döttrar*, *Sand*, which have been performed at the Royal Swedish Opera and on international tours.

Musical Collaborations and Theatre

Levin is also part of the improvisational guitar duo Nyman/Levin with Hans Nyman. Together they have released three full-length albums and created original music for Stockholm 59° North and Pontus Lidberg Dance.

In 2019, he made his debut as a musical theatre composer with *Avgång 23.11*, premiered at ScalateaternLevin Studios in Stockholm in collaboration with Stockholm Musikteater. Their partnership continued with *Tankens Revolution* in 2024.

Since 2003, Levin has run his own production facility, Levin Studios, located in central Stockholm. In 2019, he signed with Playground Music Scandinavia.
