George Doherty

George James Doherty (Born on the 5th of August, 1908) Doherty was a ___ born in Portsmouth, England. --insert 2-4 sentence summary of him here--.

Early Life

His started his primary education at the age of 3 at Penhale Road Boys School. His family remained in England During WWI, whilst his father served for the Royal Navy.

The Doherty family decided to relocate to New Zealand on the 6th of March 1921. Doherty described the voyage as the greatest event of his childhood. They ended up berthing at Wellington, then catching a train to Auckland where they lived with family for three months until they could find accommodation. Doherty was enrolled at Bayfield Primary School, Ponsonby in Standard Six. Now living in Newton, Doherty then attended Seddon Memorial Technical College (Secondary Education).

__ career

After graduating, Doherty became a Civil Engineer & Surveying Cadet. During the year 1926 Doherty joined the staff of Percy Preest's Store, this earned him £1.10.0 a week. During this time Doherty spent three years as a private for the New Zealand Army. In 1929 He applied for a second position with a newly developed 'Four Square Store' organisation Foodstuffs Ltd, Quickly rising to the manager role.

On the 6th of March, 1942, Doherty was deployed to the Auckland Drill Hall. Then arriving at the Trentham Camp for a three week training period. Throughout WWII Doherty spent time in New Caledonia, Vella Lavella, Green Islands & Niaouli Land. Doherty returned to New Zealand with the 3rd Division which was then disbanded.

On his return from the war Doherty received a Rehabilitation Loan to purchase a house in Pacific Street, Waiuku. Having been granted £2000 at 2% interest. In the year 1950, Doherty purchased the local Four Square Building, The local Bake House & Roscoe's premises (trading as a grocery store). Doherty Stores Limited was incorporated in March 1955.

Doherty's civic affairs began when he was invited to stand for the Town Board in 1947. Doherty was put on both the Water and Fire Committees. The fire brigade was overseen by the Town Board. The Library was run by volunteers until it was handed to the Town Board. Doherty become in charge of reorganising it. His suggestion of a 'Law Cemetery' was adopted and introduced. In 1955 Doherty was appointed Deputy Chairman of the board, as Waiuku has now been granted Borough Status. In the 1974 council elections Doherty topped the poll with 100 more votes than the mayor at the time, He came top in the following two elections as well. During this time Doherty was both the Deputy Mayor & Councillor to Waiuku.

In 1977 Doherty was invited to attend diner with the Queen Elizabeth II twice, Tuesday, 22nd February & Tuesday, 20th of September, in both cases the events were held at Trillo's Downtown.

Later life

Doherty Doherty passed away on the 2nd of June 1987 (Aged 78). Doherty Doherty now rests peacefully at the Waiuku Cemetery.
