Systems

[edit]

There are several systems using word-of-mouth:

  • The grapevine is gossip that is spread with verbal communication. The grapevine is an unofficial mechanism that information is shared from person to person.[1] This term comes from the telegraph used during the American Civil War, which people called "the grapevine" because the wires looked like the strings used to train vines. Rumors were frequently spread through the telegraph lines, and when people were asked where they learned something, they would say, "I heard it through the grapevine."[2]
  • The bush telegraph is similar to the grapevine, but originated in Australian English. The term refers to communication that warned bushrangers (escaped convicts hiding in the Outback) about police movements.[3]
  • Microblogging uses online communication methods, such as the social media website Twitter. People use microblogging to share their thoughts with anyone else connected to them through social media platform.[4]
  • Lectures are presentations given to an audience to provide instruction or education.[5]
  • Conversations happen when two or more people talk about their thoughts, feelings, and opinions. They share news and information with each other.[6]
