Fiona Ross was the Director of the National Library of Ireland (NLI) from 2010-2014.[1] During her time as Director, several major collaborations and initiatives were undertaken by the National Library. In 2011, NLI, Trinity College Dublin, and University College Dublin began joint collaborations to share storage facilities for some of their collections, due to inadequate or unsafe storage conditions for the materials.[2][3]

During Ross’ time as Director, The National Library of Ireland undertook several public access initiatives. This included publishing a significant amount of the Irish author James Joyce’s manuscripts, photographs, and letters to the National Library’s online collection.[4] These had previously only been in NLI’s physical collections, but were published for free to the digital collection to allow for larger public access.[5] During her duration as Director of NLI, the National Library also received donations of manuscripts from Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney, which were then made available to the public.[6] [7] The National Library of Ireland undertook many digital services during Ross’ time as Director.[8][9] This included access to the aforementioned James Joyce manuscripts. The National Library also began digitising thousands of photographs from Irish history beginning in 2010, the year Ross took over the office of Director.[10][11]
