Yunnan Institute of Development
[edit]From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Yunnan Institute of Development (YID), based in Yunnan Province's Yuxi Prefecture, is a Sino-Danish non-governmental organization, non-formal adult education institute established in 2001 in partnership with Yuxi Teacher College. The institution provides an 11-month volunteer training program that trains students as Development Instructors for work in China, India, Africa, and other locations worldwide[1].
Students of the program work with many transnational non-governmental organizations after completion of the training program by providing rural development activities. Through outreach in local rural communities, these Development Instructors serve the needs of each community teaching a variety of programs. Programs have included offering seminars on nutrition, hygiene, health, sanitation safety, and HIV/AIDS prevention. Development Instructors support local schools and teachers with their activities in children’s clubs, primary-school and middle-school support, curriculum development, teacher training, and early childhood development[1]. Additional activities also include running microcredit projects and income generating activities in the whole province. Instruction takes place in both English and Mandarin☃.
The organization currently recieves funding through many international non-governmental organizations including: Global Fund for Children [2],
YID has multiple partner schools around the world that utlize the same non-tradtional education program to train volunteers. YID cooperates with 18 similar Institutes worldwide. to train willing volunteers to improve literacy, health access, and nutrition across the world.
The program is modeled after the Folk High Schools that began in Denmark.
After having completed the 11 months program, the participants will also be offered to continue their humanitarian work as international DI's in either India or Zambia.

Education is based on ‘Learning by doing’; the Institute is a place where the participant plans and implements his/her own education, where the teacher is a facilitator, and where YOU the participant are the overall responsible of your own education. This is an important factor why you can learn that much in such a short time.
Through our activities and programs we wish to address some of the basic issues of the world such as poverty alleviation and development, HIV/AIDS, environment protection, etc.
We envision and will create YID to be a place where people from all walks of life and from a diversity of backgrounds can equip themselves with skills and knowledge to take part in changing the world for the better – both in China and abroad.
Our History:
The Institute started in November 2001. It’s part of the 19 DRH schools international network. (www.drh-movement.org) From 2001-2004 we had several 14-month courses (6 month preparation at the Institute, 6 month development work in China or Africa, 2 month conclusion and evaluation) with opportunity to work either in Africa or in China.
In 2005 we started 11 month courses only focusing on development work in Yunnan

[edit]It aims to promote social development in China, Africa and India. Activities include educating people about health, hygiene and HIV, building schools and helping poor farmers with bio-gas and microfinance.
Participants are trained in 11-month courses as ‘Development Instructors’ (DI) interested in learning about and practicing development. Upon completion Chinese and foreign participants can choose to conduct development work in Yunnan, Africa or India. There are no special qualifications needed to join the Development Instructor programme.
From 2008 the Institute is to also implement shorter courses for project managers. At YID, education is based on "learning by doing". The Institute is a place where the participant plans and implements their own education, where the teacher is a facilitator and where the participant is primarily responsible for their own exploratory learning. YID also runs a Rural Community Development Project called Child Aid, where the DI's receive practical training and actually live and work during their five-month practical training period. YID works closely together with local authorities in the rural areas and in the city.
DRH movement[edit | edit source]
[edit]YID is one of 13 schools worldwide which are part of the DRH Movement (DRH translates from Danish words to mean "The Travelling Folk High School"). YID provides training for volunteers who work in the "Humana People to People" programme. The volunteers work as teachers, and help to train farmers and to develop small businesses in Africa and China.
The organization was founded in 1970 from students traveling the world and discovered that, "all human beings sought the same things: peace, health, safety, family and opportunity".[2]
Today, schools around the globe train development workers in 6, 9, 18, 24 and 36-month programs to serve the poor in partnership with global development leader Humana People to People.
With over $80 million dollars each year, 360 development projects and scores of humanitarian, government and corporate partnerships, this small school has become one of the most influential movements on the planet to eradicate poverty."[3]
