Nature study

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

[edit]

The reason as to why I decided to choose this article is because science has always been an appealing topic for me since I was little and was not aware as to how important the study of science or even nature in that matter has impacted the way teachers decide to go and take kids more outdoors and create laboratory experiments instead of just reading from textbooks. I was also unaware as to how many females have joined stem schools and became apart of science profession. Overall I thought this article was super interesting and informative.

Lead Section: In the article Nature Study the lead includes an informative fact as to how the Nature Study Movement came about and what the movement consisted of. The nature study movement was said to have originated from the United states during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Nature Study movement included actisits that were well known as educator and naturalists that go by the name of  Anna Botsford Comstock, Liberty Hyde Bailey, Louis Agassiz, William Gould Vinal, and Wilbur S. Jackman. The movement essentially was needed to help popularize the study of nature and to advocate the importance of  nature being implemented into school subjects like science. The articles lead overall does inform the readers as to what they will be discussing in a concise and clear manner, but fails to mention a brief description as to what the article will include or as to what the major sections will include. Additionally the article does start off with the time period in which the Nature Study Movement has occurred which is dated to be recent and overall includes information that is valuable and important for the present. The article states that without this movement school systems would have been missing important information taht can broaden students' way of thinking when it comes to science in real life and in class. The lead overall is concise and very straight to the point it does not have any extra information that is not needed.

Content: The article content is very relevant to the topic because they not only provided good and reliable background research. The article also provides how nature study has affected many areas in both the childrens education system,  the womens movement and neven the workforce. However I do think some topics discussed were a bit of a reach and kind of distracted readers from the main idea/main points.

Tone & Balance: The tone of the article seems to be persuasive because they included many examples to convince readers that the study of nature is crucial to know and therefore had to have a movement to advocate for its importance. Since the article included many examples there were some that seemed to be overpresented. However there were certaoin major sections that did in fact have a neutral tone.

Sources & References: The facts and data used within the article were supported by textbooks and organizations such as The Ecyclopedia of Internet Archives. Additionally there were studies that further supported the authors claim that the study of science has increased over time after the Natures Study Movement.

Images & Media: The article does not include any photos to further support the claim of how important the study of nature is. Additionally the article doesn't include any graphs or statistical images to help appeal to the readers.

Talk Page Discussion: The talk page indicates that the article is a B Class on the quality scale and the article is also rated of low importance. Moreover the article is part of the history of science wikiproject. Lastly it has no edits or posts to ensure that grammar is correct or to edit any material from the article since it has been posted.

Overall Impression: Overall I feel like the article was super informative because I did not know that The American Nature Study Society was founded in 1908 and is still present today, and how important the nature study movement expanded the horizons of science both in a classroom and outside of a classroom. However the article could be more targeted to certain examples being used to support the author's claims instead of bringup numerous examples which makes the article seem unorganized and a bit unreliable.
