The French Center for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE) is a research center of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MAE - IFRE 23) and of the et du Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS - USR 3137), based in Addis Ababa. The current director is the geographer Marie Bridonneau.
Researches conducted at the CFEE concern the Horn of Africa, in every field of Human science, Social science, Earth science and Environmental science.
History
[edit]The CFEE succeeds the Home of Ethiopian Studies created by the anthropologist Jacques Bureau, integrated to the IFRE network in 1991. The Home of Ethiopian Studies succeeded the Archaeology Section of the Ethiopian Imperial Government, founded in 1952 and composed of French experts. In 2007, the Home of Ethiopian Studies became the French Center for Ethiopian Studies and the Unity of Service and Research 3137, following its contractualization by the CNRS.
This institute was headed by the ethnologist Jacques Bureau, by the historian Bertrand Hirsch, by the political scientist Gérard Prunier, by the historian François-Xavier Fauvelle, by the anthropologist Eloi Ficquet, by the archaeologist Jean-François Breton, and by the political scientist David Ambrosetti. The current director of the CFEE is the geographer Marie Bridonneau.
Location
[edit]The CFEE is located in the JanMeda district of Addis Ababa, between Menelik Hospital and Sidist Kilo.
Research axes and missions
[edit]The CFEE activities concern Earth sciences, Paleontology, Archaeology, Human sciences, Social sciences, and Environmental science. Its competence area goes from Ethiopia to Erythrea, Somaliland, Djibouti and South Sudan.

Historicaly, the CFEE mainly invested the domains of paleo-anthropological, historical and social sciences. During the past few years, the center greatly developed researches in the contemporaneous field, with subjects such as migrations, urban development, cultural heritage policies, women status in society, or peace and security issues in the Horn of Africa.

Diffusion
[edit]In order to expose the researches outcomes, the CFEE organizes scientific seminars and workshops during the whole year. It also participates or supports the organization of scientific events (workshops, study day, international symposium) organised in Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa and outside the region.
The CFEE also presents temporary exhibitions, and participated to conceive the exhibition Million Years of Life and Culture in Ethiopia of the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, in partnership with the Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage and the French Embassy in Ethiopia, inaugurated on the 3rd of December 2014.
Finaly, the CFEE publishes once a year the Annales d’Éthiopie, international scientific journal, as well as scientific work and books for the general public, about Ethiopia and other countries of the Horn of Africa.
Supporting research
[edit]The CFEE develops partnerships with numerous Ethiopian institutions, as the ARCCH (Authority for Research and Conservation of the Cultural Heritage) or the IES (Insitute of Ethiopian Studies), as well as with several Ethiopian universities (Addis Ababa University, Mekelle University, Debre Berhan University).
The CFEE supports academic exchanges, providing study grants to Ethiopian and French Master or PhD students.
It also offers logistic support to numerous French and foreign students and researchers doing their fieldwork in the country.

The Berhanou Abebe Library of Ethiopian studies is at the center of the CFEE life, named after the scholar Berhanou Abebe. It offers numerous scientific or fantasy references, concerning the Horn of Africa, covering many domains: more than 8 200 books, including hundreds of old books and 1130 journal issues, in European languages, amharic or Geʽez.
It also has a map collection, to prepare research missions, and a newpapers collection made of seven complete Ethiopian newpaper collection, published in amharic and in english, and kept since 1934 for the oldest.
The Berhanou Abebe Library of Ethiopian studies is open to everyone from 8:30am till 12:30 pm, and from 2:00 pm till 5:00pm, from Monday to Friday.
Publications
[edit]The Annales d’Éthiopie
[edit]Started in 1955 by the Section of the Ethiopian Imperial Government, the Revue franco-éthiopienne d’archéologie et d’études classiques is published until 1990, before being started again in 2000, by the French Center for Ethiopian Studies, renamed as the Annales d’Éthiopie. The journal is open to every field of Human and Social sciences in Ethiopia and in the countries of the Horn of Africa, and to Paleontology and Environment sciences.
The Annales d’Éthiopie is one of the main international and interdisciplinary journals about Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, edited and published by the CFEE and Les Editions de Boccard. The issues are archived online on the freely accessible website Persee.fr one year after their publication. The journal accepts and published articles in English and in French.
The special issues of the Annales d’Éthiopie
[edit]The special issues of the Annales d’Éthiopie are monographs or collections of studies, in French, that present research dealing with Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa in History, Archaeology, or Palaeontology. Five issues had been published so far, in collaboration with the Editions de Boccard:

City-Guides
[edit]The CFEE publishes a collection of English-writen guides of urban sites having a cultural heritage value (Gondar, Dire Dawa, the district of Piazza of Addis Ababa are already available), distributed in Ethiopia by Shama Books. They are books for the general readership whose authors are researchers who have acquired considerable knowledge of Ethiopian cities. These experts share their knowledge by describing the unique atmosphere of several neighbourhoods they have selected for each city.
