Joel Burditt Crain was born 8 Sep 1813 in Hardeman County, Tennessee to Ambrose and Mary (Burdett or Burditt) Crain. He moved to San Augustine County, Texas and joined the 2nd Reg. Texas Vols, 8th Infantry of Capt. Kimbro's Company. This company later joined Sam Houston and Joel became his Sergeant Major. During the Battle of San Jacinto, Sam Houston wore Crain's cap and rode his horse in order to disguise his true identity from the enemy. Crain received the sword of surrender from Juan Nepomuceno Almonte at that Battle and carried official dispatches of surrender to various authorities.
